HELP
Car has been running perfect, but broke down tonight.

Rev counter stopped working, loss of power and oil pressure up slightly. Temp OK.
Then MIL light came on, and it now will not restart. Just clicks. Any ideas anyone.

Hi Neil.

I'm thinking that as well.

Just looking through some past threads.

Went back to retry starting her up, but still the same. This time wipers came on slow, window dropped...battery/cell may be flat...due to the big fuse.

Can anyone tell me where abouts the big fuse is. I know its suppose to be behind the alternator, on top of the gearbox! Is it in view on the attached photo?

Cheers.

it's in the centre line of the car at the back of the engine. If you shine a torch in the gap between the back of the engine and the bulkhead, you should be able to make it out.

did you get it fixed??? if you look down the back of the engine as if your looking down back from the fuel rail, there is a little black plastic box (on mine at least) with a wire coming out each side. open that and you will find the fuse. you'll probably need an extension bar to reach it but it's easy enough to change.

Found where it is. Its where it should be

Looks like it is the fuse. Burnt away on one end. Take a look at the second pic.

I've just got to find one now. Is it just a matter of taking the old one out and putting a new one in? Do I have to uncouple battery etc...

you can do it with the battery still connected, but when i changed mine i put insulating tape round the extention bar of the socket so it didn't short out on anything. hope this helps.
you may well need to charge the battery up as well if its gone flat.

Managed to get some fuses. 60p each. I'll fit it later in the week, then try it once the battery is recharged.

I think the old one must have been loose, due to where its 'melted'. Its not gone in the middle.

Back running again. Dont know what caused it to go in the first place, must be one of those things. Having said that, it is a TVR.

Thanks all.

Glad that's sorted.

From the pic, you have a later 4.2 than our 1997, with the oil dipstick in the "earlier" location, if you see what I mean..odd.

Hi Sean.

Not sure when they changed the dipstick position up towards the front of the engine. My cars a late '98 model (first reg 28/8/98).

VIN Number explanation below.

Position Typical Example Explanation

1 S Northern Europe
2 D Great Britain
3 L (with1&2) TVR Engineering
4 C Cerbera Body Variant
5 A First Variant
6 1 AJP engine Engine variant
7 1 Engine variant 2
8 A AJP Engine Base Engine
9 x Check digit
10 W Year Code See table below
11 B Always B
12 0 Always 0 Not Used
13 0 Always 0
14 1 Sequential build no. for year Thousands
15 2 Sequential build no. for year Hundreds
16 3 Sequential build no. for year Tens
17 4 Sequential build no. for year Units

SDL CA 11Ax WB00 1234 would be the 234rd 4.2 AJP Cerbera built in 1998.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SDL at the beginning of the chassis number is a TVR Unique ID

The next four characters are as follows:

4.2 AJP CERBERA -CAT = FAC2
4.5 AJP CERBERA GT-CAT = FAC5
4.2 AJP CERBERA -NON-CAT = FAN2
4.5 AJP CERBERA GT-NON-CAT = FAN5

The next is a P for Petrol engine

The next is 1-10 or an X, this is an internal check digit that can tell if the chassis number is a genuine one.

The tenth digit is the Year code V=97 T= 96 S=95 etc

The next (11th.) is a month in build code. A=Jan B=Feb etc. Except I

The 12th & 13th are just 0 & 1 not used for any purpose.

The last four digits are the sequential build number for the Year starting at 1000.

SDL FAC5 P x V L 01 1200 (example only) would be a 4.5litre AJP Petrol Engined Cerbera Built around November 1997, the 200th built in 1997.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See table below
SDL FAC2 P 1 to 10 or x T B 01 1234
Unique TVR identifier Vehicle Type Fuel - P=Petrol VIN Verification Digit Manufacturing Year & Month Nothing Particular Sequential Build No.

L 1990 P 1993 T 1996 X 1999 2 2002
M 1991 R 1994 V 1997 Y 2000 3 2003
N 1992 S 1995 W 1998 1 2001 4 2004

Bear in mind that there may be a considerable delay between the month the build started & the vehicle being registered, especially if the vehicle was a cancelled order or a dealer demo.

A JAN D APR G JUL K OCT
B FEB E MAY H AUG L NOV
C MAR F JUN J SEP M DEC

Comparing my Chassis number with the info above, my car was the 81st car built during 1998 (not sure how many cars were built that year) but was regested 28/8/98. Perhaps the main dealer didn't want to sell it straight away..they liked it too much.

Hi Mick,
Ours was first reg 08/97, and the engine no. 4200526 was of the later type. Go figure...

So that makes my Cerb the 167th one built in 1996, which makes it the 167th one overall I guess?
