I'm due for an intermediate service. However, I had a minor oil leak last year due to the breather hose becoming kinked. Some oil was forced through the casing and WLA advised if it persisted it would be an engine out job. Have found the odd spot of oil on the garage floor and do still have a definite leak.

Should I bite the bullet and get the work done at a main dealer or would this be something an independent could handle. If so any recommendations in the southeast?

Looks like the wallet is about to take a severe beating either way, but would like to lessen the pain if possible...especially as the sports exhaust needs replacing.

can't you just live with the leak?

If it's not leaking then there's no oil in it. Then you need to be concerned!!

I was told that if it drops less than a saucer full in an hour or so it's only weeping not a leek. And as this particular luminary said 'we only fix leaks - not weeps'

Seriously, depending on the severity a major expedition to fix a small leak seems a little extravagant...

Cheers

I can certainly live with it, was just thinking if I need it serviced anyway am I going to end up paying for the service and then at a later date having to get it done.
Are minor leaks not uncommon then? What about resale if and when the time comes?

Mine leaks a few drops here and there - uses about 1 litre every 1,500 to 2,000 miles or so. Was advised over a year ago that this could be an engine-out job, but the leakage has not increased and I've put another 15k on the clock to take it to circa 50k. So far so good... In the meantime I'll just keep checking it every couple of weeks and topping up as necessary. I don't think a bit of oil leakage is much to worry about as long as the oil level is monitored.

I've got a '97 Golf VR6 which is every bit as oil-thirsty as the Cerb, but its done 100k and its still got all the Tabasco it used to have, if not more. [OK, I know, "chalk-and-cheese", but it makes me feel better!]
