Just bought a 4.5LW (2002) and due to leave on Thursday this week on a
two week European trip, yikes!

Jools (cerb god) has run his eye over it and the car keeps overheating at idle.
Basically the return of fluid to the expansion tank is minimal, when revs are applied
the flow is intermmitant. Currently have all pipes off with no blockage in sight?
Any ideas as to what could be causing this? hope its not the water pump as it's an engine
out job. Jools tells me he hasn't seen this before, which is a worry in itself.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chim's currently in storage, and on standby.

It does sound like the pump if the lines are clear, It sounds like the pumps impeller is on it's way out. But unsure of the internals of the Cerbs pump. If it is pumping at an intermittent rate.

Thermostat is a possibility but it does sound like the dreaded pump low on pressure at low revs

Thanks. Run the full diagositics and all sensors are working ok.

New chip brings fans on 10 Deg sooner, so looking like pump!

Just checking st/st cooling rails in the hope that one is blocked.

Just had the same thing, and the thermostat was siezed causing it to over heat at idle ok whilst driving, and hope yours has not the other problem, head gasket had gone as well which is an engine out job any way, I would try a sniff test first to eliminate head gasket and if it fails that then engine out and check thermostat while egine out good luck, lucky you have Chim on stand by, I,am currently loking for a Chim for a new member to the fleet had one before and wife like to have the hood down which is a problem with a Cerb

Good shout from billy regards the stat, I would measure the flow from before and after the stat and that should tell you if it is the pump failing or stat seizing closed.

Does anyone know how the impeller is driven by the drive shaft?
Not sure if it's a woodruff key or press fit, only thing I can
think is that the shaft is turning but the impeller isn't.

Thanks for everyones suggestions/help so far.......will I make
it to Spa...........we'll see!

Not hear of this before.

I would connect the pipes back up, fill the system, then just undo the first pipe on the output side of the pump with the engine running, if water shoots out, pump is working, if water drains out, pump is not working. Obviously turn engine off straight after.

Change the temp sensor... I know it says it's fine on the laptop but so did mine and yet it was fncked. I was getting over heating issues and every combination of water faults you can think of. Put on a new one and never a fault since. I know it's not the pump but you never know, you just never know and its a cheap fix.

Thermostat changed, cars currently running and..............behaving itself

I knew cerb ownership would be challenging, but I wasn't expecting it this soon!

Think I've aged a year in the last 24hrs.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, steep learning curve on it's way....

Here she is.
