As the topic title suggests I'm currently tipping around in a 2008 IB M5. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with it. It ticks all the boxes for a petrol head family man like myself but something inside has me pining for a cerb and something to cart the family and sports equipment around in.

So I guess my question to you guys is, has any of you gone from a quick saloon to a cerb and a daily run around RR? and if so, would you reccommend it?
Apologies if this has already been covered and I'm flogging a dead horse here.

Rory.

Rory.

I know just how you feel. Whilst not M5 quick, I'd had Vauxhalls - an Astra VXR and then an Insignia SRi. Quickish, but I was also pining for a seriously quick knicker-elastic snapper.

So I went for a Cerb, and my 2nd car is a Land Rover Freelander TD4.

Works perfectly - beautiful eye-turner, that is has a fab chorus (loud) plus it's rudely quick, and then if I'm going long distance or carting the kids to and from the ex's, or biking or whatnot, then the Landy works a treat (or at least it did until I lost the key).

I went from a M3 to the Cerb and Land Rover........ I've never looked back.

But I must say the BMW was a lot better put together than the TVR... But for smiles per miles the TVR wins hands down.

Whilst not strictly comparable - went from E39 535i V8 to X5 4.4 V8 petrol as the family wagon, the Cerb is the "weekend car" and until about a month ago had an A4 1.8T as the works hack: sold the Audi to a mate so now slumming it with just two cars.... frown

Don't know if you have kids - but the Cerb is fine for younger kids as a weekend toy - it takes my family of 4 (2 kids now 5 and nearly 7) just fine on day trips out etc; and the X5 is great for daily use, lugging around muddy kit, shopping, work trips etc etc

Keep the Cerb for best (but try to use it frequently), and have something else (anything really) for the daily grind, winter log, etc etc

Go for the Cerb - if it is an itch, it won't just cure itself you know.... wink

Dad runs a P38, I run a Cerb. They're both not particularly well built, and expensive to maintain, but they both have so much charm that neither of them will be leaving the family soon.

Had a Cerbera 6 years ago, sold it due to ex wife telling me (back when we were together) that I needed to sell it. Not a family car. Sold it for a 280bhp Subaru Legacy estate. Then got company cars... now have a BMW 3 series ED 320d (65 MPG)
My Cerb (bought 2 years ago) ticks all my boxes where the BM is just practical etc. I sold my first one and IMMEDIATELY regretted it!! Just fitted sports pipes and decats... Will be getting it wrapped next week or so. Get yourself a Cerb!!! ASAP... and yep, a Range Rover will do too.

I went from a modified Impreza WRX to a speed six Cerb and a Mitsubishi Colt run-around, loved both cars and wish I didn't have to get rid of either (the fast cars, the Bishi was ste), however I had to when I was setting up my business. I'm now looking at getting a. Broken Cerb and sticking an LS7 under the bonnet biggrin will just be a test mule as I'm wanting to build my own car based on a Tiv chassis.

ETA just do it, I guarantee you will not regret it.

Ive had an E60 M5 and its an awesome piece of kit. I sold it however after about 6 months as ultimately I found it boring. It was quick but with no real sense of occasion and for 80% of the time I could have been driving a 530D ( motorway journeys etc)

I then bought a Range Rover Vogue second hand after having previously run a new RR Sport which was cheap and plasticky. The Vogue was superb and even though it was 6 years old still felt special. I sold it in the end as it started making expensive noises.

I now have a 4.2 Cerbera for when I need to "feel the speed" and although not ultimately as fast as the M5 I do enjoy diving it more than the M5. My day to day car is an S4 estate and although very very quick, still doesnt have a special feel to it, but its very competent in many areas and possible the best all rounder Ive owned.

May go back to a used RR next once the S4 lease is up.

Obi, this is exactly the boat I'm in. It's really only exciting at licence losing speeds. I'd want to get the youngest Cerb available though. I'm thinking '04/'05 but these are like hens teeth?

Out of interest. How much quicker is a M5 than an ajp cerb?

I havent got experience with an M5 but i would imagine it gives you confidence to drive it hard most of the time, but in a cerb you always have to be aware it can throw you into a field if you get too excited with it!!

I would also have thought with all the M5`s electronic aids it would get off the line a bit cleaner than the cerb, no first hand experience but own & have drove quite a few beemers including an E92 M3, i adore M5`s but would struggle to keep up with the fuel bills!!

Just interested as I owned a E39 M5 last year and although not disappointed with the power it didn't really feel quick til 80 plus...

I have to be honest i have always thought that the really quick cars just get up & go at 100mph & the cerb really flys at 100mph plus on a private road of course! little weight & it thrives on high revs, i drove my brother in laws E46 M3 & i was left wanting in terms of power, it didnt feel that quick to me.

I love the E39 M5 aswell i bet it was really nice, the trouble with beemers are that the majority of them are too tubby & carry alot of weight, which obviously blunts performance, when i had my X5 4.8 i never thought it was going to stop when you tried slowing down!

The X5 is obviously the extreme heavy weight, but the driving experience suffered as a result, this is why i love my cerb so much, plenty of power & little weight a happy combination smile

I'm also thinking of a cerb for my upcoming mid life crisis. Have 2 kids (12 and 10) so need 4 seats but want something noisy and silly that will make me smile each time I drive it.
Will have to do the daily station run (5 miles each way) and occasional trip - probably 10k pa - am I completely mad to consider a cerb for this or should I go slightly more sensible - 630 cab/mustang - I think I need a v8!

The cerbera is def on my 'to do' list so maybe next year I might take the plunge (funds permitting)

I didn't want to feel a bit let down as I did with the M5 on the acceleration front but I'm sure I won't be.

I think the cerb works better as a second car & run a daily, the cerb can be tempremental some times! plenty do run a cerb as a daily & ive used mine everyday for work all week before, but fuel costs can spiral as it begs to be driven hard.

I only do 3k to 4k a year in mine, but some say they should be driven all the time, i suppose its whatever suits you best.
