help i have a 97 p 4.2 cerbie with a new bottom end rebuild, new ecu, coil packs, leads, plugs, air flow sensor, crank sensor and a disconnected immobilisor. It has recently had a bad misfire sorted. It feels sooo much quicker now it has been fettled but today went for a spin and it cut out after 1/4 mile. It restarts whilst backfiring and sounding awful works for a few seconds and then dies, especially if you rev it. It also has a hot start problem. Any bright ideas? ps it has not run out of fuel but is on 97 ron not optimax as usual.
Sounds like a fuelling problem to me, either to lean or too rich. Why would it happen after a 1/4 of a mile? Depending on how long the car has been sitting in the sun, the 1/4 mile point could well be when the fans kick in. The fans draw a lot of power and a dodgy ECU can have problems working the mapping to compensate (as I found out over the past week with a lot of help from the Topcats guys) Mine resulted in the car flooding when I was in traffic, but nothing as catastrophic as yours.
Have you also checked the big fuse?
Have you also checked the big fuse?
1. Check all your leads are seated tightly - mine have pooped off on occasions
2. Check that the metal "crimp" inside the end of the lead is giving a tight fit around the plug - this has also happened to me.
3. Check that the leads are not arcing e.g. spark is drawn to the engine block rather than the top of the plug - you'll probably want to do this at night - you shoul dbe able to see it sparking
4. Get some Magnecor competition leads.
All things I've discovered over the last year...
