Wipers!

Driving home with the wipers on last night and all was going well. Called in to the Petrol Station for a tank full of the finest Optimax then it all went eeeerrrrrrrrr ………. Well the wipers would come on! I kept pressing the switch and nothing, the other switches on the wheel worked fine including the wash wipe. I waited for the rain to ease and contemplated driving home by just pressing the wash wipe button every now and again. I moved forward turned the wheel and waited for a gap. I gave the button one last go and BINGO it worked! No problems all the way home.

Now I am thinking that there maybe a wire breaking down from the button to the ribbon cable, has anyone else has this problem or similar??? I want to catch it before it catches me or the Brother in Law out.

Cheers

Apparently it’s a common problem. If the connections are split/ corroded at either end of the ribbon you can simply trim and re-fit. If it's not on the end then it's a new cable.

Only reason I know is because I've read it on here before. Plenty of posts about it so try a search.

Cheers,

Rob

Have a similar problem with the dipped beam/flash button...worked intermittantly, then stopped altogether, until I recently used the horn, then the dipped beam button decided to work for about 20 minutes...now its stopped again. Cables breaking down?

Maybe I'll buy one of those 50million candlepower lamps that plug into the cigarette lighter and blind everyone

TVRs...dont ya just luv um!

Even when they are working the wipers arent very good. I always ensured that I had the screen treated with rain X . that way you dont need the wipers!

Yep your ribbon cable ist kaput. The wiper is on the outside of the cable IIRR. So it means your cable is slowly going. flash followed by horn I think is the order of progressive deterioration.

The lead is some £25 !!! Looks like a toilet roll coiled inside the hub.

Easy way to test is to pull back the rubber gaitor behind the steering wheel. You should see a poor quality white connector for the steering wheel buttons. Remove and test with a simple ohmmeter.

If the leads not repairable don't bother buying another. You can make a better job of it with a soldering iron and some normal (non crack when flexed)ribbon cable.
