Ok, looks like I will find all the answers I need in this thread:

The knob is attached to a shaft, which has a groove in it. I think it attached by a fine, Allen grub-screw.
The locking position of the system is controlled by a collar which has a larger Allen grub-screw. The full range of the shaft, which attaches to the two release pullrods, passes from fully open, through a central, locked position to a fully open position again. This allows you to decide whether you want to open the bonnet by turning the knob Clockwise or not.

I would think that either your knob is loose – and will not turn the shaft
OR
The sprung ball-bearing, which is located in the shaft groove, is jammed. If this is the case then judicious application of the life-saving WD40 and a bradawl should free the system.

I had a hard job writing that without laughing – especially when I found this picture in the directory pertaining to the subject

Ha ha, that's funny :-)
Anyway, when I got round to looking at the knob I found that the big screw on the collar was butting up against a chassis tube, I just needed to pull it out slightly so it would turn fully round and go back to its original position, locking and unlocking as before.
Cheers
