This has finally come come out of the dash when yanking the satnav plug out.
Looking at how it's retained I can see that it has come out because of constant twisting
which has eventually unscrewed the retaining collar at the back.
The +ve lead has also come off the pin at the back and lurks almost out of sight.

Any tricks on re-installing it?
If my hand was half its size I might just be able to push the wire connector on and hold the back collar from behind the dash while screwing the socket in from the front but as it isn't it looks to me that the dash will have to come out which seems a bit drastic.

No tricks that I'm aware of, you just need small hands - yours or someone else's. You definitely don't need to remove the dash, but you do need to remove the fuse, because you will short it out before it goes together properly.

Make sure the connections haven't been bent out of shape previously, because if they are aligned correctly it makes things a lot easier.

it's much easier to get it all back together if you pop out the ashtray first. Just pull it out gently and it pop's back in easily.

Excuse the stupid question but where is the fuse for the cigarette lighter?

Think it's No.8. in the boot (but might be 7 or 9)

^^ This!

While you are at it, think of replacing it with a nicer one:

I found yesterday that if you remove the instrument cowling/bubble then you can reach down into the area a lot easier then struggling.

Noticed it when changing a bulb in the rev counter.

Thanks Peter. Does the cowling come off relatively easy?

I think I blew a fuse as warned against by a previous poster. I am going to tackle it tomorrow.

You have to remove the knee cowling first, mines held on with a wing nut onto the side of the car, and another up by the light switch, just move it out the way once they are undone, no need to completely remove it, then reach up inside the dash and feel for two wing nuts either side of the clocks that hold the bubble cowling on, careful of the dash leather, sometimes helps to drop the steering wheel down on the adjustment lever.

Once you've done it once of twice its pretty quick.

Can either move the dials out the way, two screws or reach over them

Good Luck.

I found that removing the centre speaker allowed me to easily access the cigarette lighter and screw it back together.
