sorry i bet you get fed up with this

i have read lots of posts about the speed 6 engine etc etc, and it blows up basically, and now this russian has said no rebuilds (idiot), but thats all bye the bye, im a esprit owner at present, want something faster the cerb is faster, my price range puts me in the 4.2 v8 bracket, with headlight conversion and spiders, my question is, seriously is the 4.2 going to die like the sp6

thankyou in advance

Cerb 4.2 V8 is likely to suffer from the same manner and seriousness of niggles as an Esprit V8 - you should fit in well.

Bear in mind, though, that an S6 engined car would cost you £3k less to buy. And for £3.5k you can have it rebuilt to Red Rose spec, even if it DOES give up the ghost. I, personally, now believe that an S6 engine that's had all of the known problems dealt with should be as reliable as an AJP... it's just the pain in getting there.

If anyone's out for the "Tiffin in the Dales" do at the weekend, I should have finished my run-in period on the engine... so am up for a play with anyone that wants to do a performance comparison.

funny you should mention this - i have just posted an inverse topic on the esprit forum - i am considering an esprit V8, possibly in addition to the Cerb!

I think I'd have as much faith in a 2000 SP6 that'd been rebuilt (for EVERYTHING) in 2004 as I would a 1998 AJP, which'll set you back about the same price.

However, if it hadn't been rebuilt, I wouldn't even touch it with yours...

So would you be happy with most new 2004 factory spec Speed six engines JS?

Or only those sent for a repair via a certain company based in the Midlands?

Basically - Have the factory resolved issues in your eyes on new S6 engines?

Well, I should hope the new finger followers are properly hardened. And I've been assured the new valve guides are different. The only remaining worry in my mind is the cylinder head... apparently there is no new design for that, but it got replaced as part of the rebuild, anyway.

I can only assume that the parts used by one are the same as the other - it'd be crazy to fit parts you knew were going to break once old stocks are used up. The question of whether extra care when putting an engine together is taken when someone's paying close attention as they're paying for a rebuild, as opposed to a "standard" initial build at the factory is up for debate, of course.

I would now be more concerned of my clutch or gearbox giving up the ghost in the next year or two than the engine. And that's a step forwards...

To answer your question; yeah I think I would be happy with a new factory spec one. Partly because I'd imagine that those common problems have been hit on the head, and partly because I'd have a nice shiny warranty to go with it.

You're assuming that TVR have some sort of stock control, know which are the parts that fail and don't just use whatever they can find from whatever supplier is still talking to them at the time

Full factory rebuilds carry a 6 month warranty!

Given the number of complaints they get, I'm sure they know which the parts are. Even some 10 year old pikey kid that came up to me the other day did!

Given how often they seem to be running out of parts, I can't imagine there's a surplus of much lying around for long!

As for whatever supplier they're talking to... Um, err... yeah, you've got a point. My better half's had to deal with two court cases against TVR from suppliers in the last year alone...
