Had a Crystal Topaz Speed6 in 2000/2001 - tempted by the white one for sale in the classifieds! Having been out of this for 10 years has anything changed? I was used to looking for problems on a five year old 6 cylinder as opposed to a 16 year old V8 - anything that has emerged as a common problem that I would not have know about 10 years ago?

I remember my personal list went through....
Air con not working
Stalling on idle
Rear window leaking
Central bonnet stabiliser (piece of velcro!) coming off

But that was it and I loved it as my only car - even happier now I can just afford one for the weekend!

Chassis rot is the main thing to look for.

V8 engines holding up well, I know of a 145K miler still running fine so buy on condition and not mileage.

I don't know their name, I don't think they are on here.

I was looking through the window of it one day when I was up at STR8SIX and noticed the interior was well used, commented that it looked tired for 45K miles and was told to take a second look, it had cover 145K miles.

It was only in for a service nothing wrong with it.

As said, look for chassis condition. Cerberas are getting old and the condition is exaggerated by the lifestyle it has lead. From dry day garage queens to coastal all weather daily drivers. There are the cars which have reached a point where they have already had the body off chassis refurb but it's not quite yet a common part of a Cerbera's history.

Take time to really look over a car's history file to see what has been done to it in the last few years. It's just all good sense stuff using a combo of checklist inspections and gut feeling (not, ooooh! shiney)

Even when you feel you have done all you can, there is still that element of chance. You know that! having been a TVR owner before. So, I hope your 'just afford one as a weekend toy' means that also includes emergency money.

Just had a quick look at the car you liked. '96 4.2 with a 4.5 bottom end, poss. a snapped crank at some time but if that was some time/miles ago and it has run ok, this is good as 4.2 cranks are no longer avilable and 4.5s are stronger. The light damage and respray are fine if the repair is done thoroughly. Cracks can re-appear in fibreglass after a year.

I would take the rear light covers off and paint the area behind in black before sealing them back again, but that's just my opinion.

I don't actually know this car or it's history.

The white is an unusual colour, but I think there are better Cerbs For Sale for that money atm. You shouldn't buy on colour of course...

Are you serious?

I regret buying nine days out of ten, but the one day the damn thing actually works makes it almost worthwhile.

Seriously man I've owned one and this is pushing the envelope on owning! I've had a GTR35 and then you don't regret a single moment - until you get it serviced and it needs new disks plus the service plus a tire and it costs £5k. I know what I'm getting in to but that quote did make me smile.....
