Hello all,

Need a bit of help and advice about the cerbera remote thermostat. I vhave fitted one to my Chim, long story regarding solution for a bespoke inlet manifold. Anyway I managed to crack three top hat liners by letting the engine get too hot so I am checking various parts before I get the engine back. One test is checking the thermostat. Does this sound right? These are my notes taken while testing itin a saucepan of water. Starting with the thermostat fully open to the radiator at 90 degrees. Starts to close off flow to Rad ie let water flow around bypass at 85deg. Two thirds closed to rad at 80deg ( two thirds open to bypass). Flow to Rad completely closed at 75deg (all flow going to bypass). It states 85degrees on the back along with Wahler which I guess is the manufacturer.

Is there a lower temp version as I would prefer a constant running temp of 80 degrees rather than 85?

Thanks Andy

I've got some lower temp ones andy, but they're not the original wahler and have a smaller stat orifice. I will check the exact temp stamped on them and let you know what they are though if you're interested ..

I got a 74c stat from Christopher Neil. If you phone up they are only £8.86 incl vat and delivery.

Thanks Joo, yep defiantly interested but concerned about restricting the flow, have you noticed any issues with them?

Thanks for the reply, apart from the temp change when warming up have you had any other issues for instance increase in eng temp in traffic on a hot day or fans running more often or for longer?

I only fitted it last week so a little early to tell. I am having problems with my cooling so thought I'd start by changing the thermostat to see if it was sticking. I thought I'd try a lower temp one.

To be honest Andy I haven't dared fit them because of the size of the orifice so I have no idea if they're any good or not in a high hp application. The one in gerrardiuk's thread link above looks identical to OE fit though? so if the internal valving is the same size in that one then that is what i would go for.
The ones I have left are definitely NOT the correct sized cerbera internals (though some parts suppliers are selling them as cerbera fit replacements). I was just going to stick them on ebay to see if they were of use to kit car builders who needed a bypass thermostat in their system.

In my limited experience Wahler are very good quality compared with other aftermarket thermostat brands.

The QTH 134 does fit but has a lower opening temperature- 78oC versus 85oC of the original Wahler/QTH 221. (I think Wahler make the Quinton Hazell ones).

I think the other difference between the 2 is the angle between the Top radiator hose, and by pass hose outlets:-
QTH 134 it is 90 degrees
QTH 221 it is more like 135 degrees

Both the ones shown on these websites are replacement pattern parts, an original Wahler one looks like this

Looking at the pictures I would guess the Power one is a QTH 134 type, and the Racetech one is a QTH221 type

I have had loads of funmad fitting these over the last 3 months, with a number of brand new ones failing when installed. The only one I have found to work is a Gates copy of the QTH 134. While I agree with Joolz the internals on these pattern part ones don't look as good as the original Wahler, mine is working fine and causing no issues. Not had it on a track yet, but have give it loads of stick with no issues. In this kind of weather the coolant runs at around 75-80oC unless stuck in traffic, even then with the fans running it stays around 90oC.

The real irony is that this week I'm having the radiator re-cored. After fitting 4 thermostats in the last 3 months and eventually finding one that works, the radiator then packs up! I am now an expert at bleeding the coolant on an AJPsmile

Hi,

Resurrecting the topic right here...

My car is running really cold when out of traffic (between 60 and 75°C). Could it be a wrong thermostat? I assume the temp should be between 85 when running and 100 in traffic, when the fans kick in. Am I right?

Hello!

Thanks for the answers!

Last, but not least... Is it worth buying a racetech version of the thermostat? It's a lot more expensive, but I've read several stories of original ones lot working...

Thanks!

My understanding is that thermostats fail after they have overheated - how ironic!

The Racetech housing looks great, but it is £200 with a T-stat. A small price to pay to save your engine from failure, but how likely is it that a standard T-stat will fail catastrophically?
