The following has been known to work as a get you home solution for a member on here - see extract below
"There are relays in the immobiliser which stick with old age. If you have the problem, press and hold down the black button and thump the helmet hole area (I recall using a 2l water bottle to reach) "

Look at the connections on the starter, you will see a thick red wire and a black wire with a grey plug on it near the starter. Pull the grey connector apart and check for 12 volts while you press the start button, there is no corrosion inside the connector, and that there is battery voltage all the time on the thick red wire. If both of these check out ok it's likely the starter solenoid is faulty.
i am beginning to find that when the battery is low instead of it fireing up immedieately it takes a second or 2 or 3 , after being run for a while it will then start imedieately again , but i am some how losing battery charge very quickly over night (the battery is good i v had it checked) , i have now got a 10w solar pannel on the dash and am hoping that i wont have any issues ( since it got flooded the other night it hasnt been well and seems more dead than usual )
Immobiliser.
The starter motor circuit in it has most likely failed.
It's a common fault.
That section can be bypassed (temporarily) to get you on the road.
The other circuits through the immobiliser will remain active and your car will be protected.
Carl Baker is the man you need for a lasting fix.
