Hi All,
Over from the Chim and Wedge pages.
Here's my question.
I've been offered a P reg 4.2 Cerb that is a Cat D as the sump was cracked along with a dented chassis member.
I'm not worried at all about the dented chassis.
The sump was removed prior to the car being declared a cat D and is now in the boot.
The engine still turns from the crank so I think its ok!
The car is in average condition with good outriggers and chassis.
My question is what would it be worth back on the road?
Cheers

How long is a piece of string?
Average condition with CAT D sounds like a 7k car though. Has the bottom of the engine been left open to the elements?!!!
If the car was seen running then it could be worth 7k, I would knock at least 2-3k off that price for being a non runner and not on the road, who knows what engine problems it could have . It really depends on condition. Mine is a Cat d Cerb but was on the road and pretty solid.Average condition with CAT D sounds like a 7k car though. I take it the engine is out the car if the sump is off?

Twice as long as it is to the middle, can you take the cam covers off and see if it looks burnt there?Average condition with CAT D sounds like a 7k car though. Has the bottom of the engine been left open to the elements?!!!
That would give you a fair clue.
Pull a couple of cam caps off and look for scoring/marks. Anything purple or really blackened has got mega hot. If the sumps off pull a couple of mains journals and big end caps and look for the same. Even after all this, you should still assume the engine will need a rebuild, price it all up and then If you decide to buy and the engine turns out ok you've had a result! Don't forget to inspect the rest of the chassis for signs of damage and check outriggers for corrosion too....
