It had had a full body off chassis rebuild. The job was receipted from Str6. Few niggles, drivers door solenoid packed up and temp guage appears inactive, one headlight reflector dark, battery mount plate very rusty, other than that a really nice car. Only managed to haggle £500 off with some sort of 6mnth warranty thrown in but couldnt resist. Drove it 100 miles home faultlessly. Engine much smoother than my old Tuscan 2S.

My joy was shortlived. When for a drive on Friday, gears got more and more difficult to engage until i had to start it in first just to set off. Possible clutch/clutch finger failure. Now in SD Autotech getting sorted

Clutch Salve Seals gone I'd say, get them to put in a Raceproved Slave and forget about it.

I just fitted a Raceproved slave to mine at the weekend. It was only about £20 more than the original part, and apart from the apparent changes in the design, it's basically just a much nicer finished part. The original is a bit rough and agricultural in places. There's been good attention to detail on the Raceproved one, which can only help where sealing surfaces etc are concerned. It comes complete with release bearing and ready to fit. I used Red Rubber Grease to lubricate it to the bellhousing.

So far, so good.

I'd suggest just fitting a new master cylinder while it's apart if it's the original. The seals on mine were shot too.

Hopefully that what it is. Pedal travel seemed normal though if a bit springy which is what made me think it was something more serious. Thanks for the advise though will certainly get a raceproved item. Bit worried Ive done the gearbox harm trying to force the gears just to get home.

Luckily mine went on the move so I just slotted it into 5th and drove it Days of Thunder style as far as seemed sensible and chose a safe place to "break down" - i.e. drove into a service station and stopped.

The starter motor is a PITA to get off and they're hugely expensive too so I didn't want to ask it to start the engine with the car in gear and provoke things. You're probably ok - but I have full breakdown cover through my bank account and decided not to push my luck needlessly.

Let us know how you get on.

Is that Raceproved slave failures fatjon?

What exactly is failing on them and how? The new seals on my old slave had swollen right up and disintegrated. The master cylinder seals had disintegrated too. I've had plenty older cars and very rarely have I had seals dissolved after 14 years, let alone ~1000 miles.

The book says to use Mobil SAE J1703 fluid. Googling that comes back with ordinary Ford spec Dot 4 fluid.

Is the seal material suitable for use with Dot 4 brake fluid?

Yes, Raceproved ones. The first had a manufacturing defect and they changed it, the second again dribbled all the fluid out within a month leaving me stranded. I put up with it for a while and then took it in and it was replaced. I laid the car up for the winter in October and yet again it has a pool of hydraulic fluid under it. Raceproved has now changed hands and I'm not sure who is running it now so looks like I'm on my own.

This is no way a reflection on the guys at raceproved (as was) though. They have maintained my car for some years and always did a nice job. I have no experience of the new owners though, despite trying to get my car trailered down on 2 occasions and nobody showing up to collect it.

Raceproved servicing has new premises and is being run by another chap. As far as I know Russell is still developing the products and so there is continuity in place should you have issues.
