Recently upgraded to refurbed 17" 4.5 wheels and thought I'd treat myself to new Toyo Proxes all round.
After fitting (by someone reputable) I noticed 2 tyes looked a bit flat the next morning - one front one rear.
Over the last few days the foot pump and I have become good mates - tyres lose about 10 psi overnight.
Have discussed with the outfit who sold them to me who suggested I take the car to the local ATS place for testing....they can find nothing wrong - no leaks at all. Valves are all fine etc
I'm at a loss. Do I just ask the guys who sold them to me to replace or try something else? Do they all do this sir?

Yep, its a well known problem with the TVR wheels, slow air loss while driving. Its got something to do with the very low profile and when its gripping round the bend some air comes out of the rim.

I have a compressor which I connect to my cigarette lighter socket and it spends an hour each day topping up the tyres before I drive the car.

In fact I've often wonder whether its possible to fit something together that stays perminently attached to the car in some way to keep the wheels topped up while I'm driving.

They don't all do it, but the 17 and up sized wheels are more prone to it. I haven't had a problem with bridgestones on my 17s though.

are you sure the wheels arent porous!! That is why you can only get spiders new now. Look for cracks in the wheels (tyres off). Maybe even x ray wheels!!

Sorry, I should have added the smiley. Bad day and the above post was sarcasm

Question you gotta ask yourself is who is more incompetent. The idiot who put your tyres on, or the idiot who thinks its reasonable not to be able to find a dirty great air leak.

Should be easy to spot a 10psi leak. You just need a big enough bucket of water.

If you didn't know about TVR wheels, you'd think that someone telling you they were porous would be a windup

Quite a few of the racelines have turned out to be, by all accounts.

AFAIK it's the 18" Raceline that were porous, the 17" were ok.

TVR recon'd that all 18" Raceline were porous, and some of the 17" ones too. But 10 psi must be valves leaking?

OK, on the subject of tyres, here's a question...

Assuming I run the tyres at 24 PSI normally (not strictly true, but we'll use that as a reference point), what PSI will these really be running at once warmed up after a few miles? i.e. 27/28/more?

Just idle curiosity (and the lack of a petrol station within a couple of miles of here)...

managed to kerb one hard day I got them ... tyres and wheel still ok ... but no air loss ...

(Im still running the cheapo federals on the rear the previous owner fitted ... no air loss there and tyres arent as bad as every body has made out !! ... sure I can kill them off in a few more months anyway!)

Good luck .. DAS

Badly kerbing a pair in the space of 5 minutes. Now that's unlucky!

My dad's Jensen refurbished alloys have been doing this, presuming the valves are o.k, his has been cured by a decent tyre fitter, wire brushing the inside of the wheel. He then put an adhesive on both the inner wall of the wheel & tyre.

Cured his
good luck

I dont like the idea of painting adhesive on the inside of the wheel. I would actually pefer to fix the problem on a 180+mph car rather than bodge it.

I can't be doing fannying around with xrays and the like :P

I've asked them to refit my old wheels and give me my money back.

How much for a set of 18" spiders and new tyres all round?

Have recently bought a set of new 18" spiders and Toyos - one of the wheels came complete with pin hole that managed to deflate the tyre overnight.

Sent back to the factory and received a 'we've never heard of that happening before sir' - yeah right!
