Wiper woes - something you might want to check out...
Discussion
Having experienced a second wiper control module burn out in three years I've decided to investigate and fix this properly after dismissing the first failure as a faulty control module. Hopefully this might save someone else the grief I've had. The basic problem is the wiper motor bearings are dry and there is also a lot of loose rust in the motor which has attached to the magnets stopping the armature turning freely.
As a result, the motor draws a lot more current than it should. Although the 20A wiper fuse is correct to protect the wiper cable loom from faults the PCB tracks inside the control module are not large enough to carry 20A so they get hot closely followed by the PCB material burning and destroying the module beyond repair.
If you have slow wipers, or the coolant header tank out for other work, I'd recommend a bit of preventive maintenance and give the wiper motor a clean out and lube.
