Are your wheels round?

Came back on Friday from a trip up to Notts for work, what a ba57ard of a journey. Going up was OK, but noticed a vibration coming from the steering. Pulled over and everything looked OK, decided to carry on a bit, bad idea that. A short time later the offside front tyre decided it was time to seperate from the wheel, must have been irreconcilable defferences etc I assume. Having screamed like a girly and got the car to the hard shoulder, I found a local dealer who took me in, sold me a new wheel and tyre and got me back on the road in under two hours (£500 less in the account though) BIG thanks to all at Peter Smith Sportscars at Hatton. Apparantly the wheel was no longer round, they think I must have gone into a pot hole or something, don't recall any big impacts though. Only good news is the non round wheel can be salvaged, the flat bit being very small and can be rounded again. (I suppose I'll be one of a few drivers who can carry a full size spare in the boot) Damned if I can think of a quick way to check the rims are not flatted though without taking into a dealer and having them take off the tyre and check the balancing etc. Any ideas??

I wrecked a very expensive wheel one time, a few years ago, I shoved on a Michelin 295 or something like that on, and the sheer weight of the tyre just made the rim collapse on the rear inner side...
