Hi

I need to replace the tyres on my car as they are 15 years old (!)

Assuming that 225/45/16 / 245/45/16 is the best front/back sizes, I cannot either online or by ringing round, find any four tyres of the same make in those sizes.

So to help me out - what does everyone use and from where do they buy them?

Cheers

Thanks. I am a fan of all four the same though.

Just to add to my own thread I have found that t1rs, r888s and hankook rs2s all come in the right sizes according to their manufacturers websites.

Hey well I still have those sizes on my car (LS7 powered) r888 front t1r rear .

Not sure how important it is for our cars, mine has been unweldy in the cold and wet but I survived each time I've driven it in those conditions...

I have seen 225 45 16 frnt & 235 50 16 rear on a 4.2 - depending on how much HP you have might be worth a look. Its a smaller tire I know, buts its not like you are going be worse off than me with the 245s bounce

Personally I have been looking for 245 50 16 - the bigger tire will give a larger contact patch - trouble is that the tire is rare over here, its a Mustang/Camaro size in the US, you can even get winter tires in that size... getmecoat

I use michelin pilot sport tyres - big improvement over my 4/5 year old goodyear eagle. Nearly the right size at 225/50 and they fit but they are not cheap

RS2's are now discontinued.

Currently looking at t1-rs at £390 delivered to my door by demon tweaks or £540 supplied and fitted by a local tyre place.

I'm a big fan of ContiSports and have 245/45/16 fitted to my other car, your options are severely limited in this size.

I have no experience of 225/45/16 - sorry.

I have also been on the hunt for new tyres.

Camskill do Kumho V70A Ecsta trackday tyres in 225/45 and 245/45. Interestingly they have a better wet rating than Toyo T1Rs - B versus G

The rubber thats on is at least 4 years old so defo time for a change.

After sticking to the sizes in the owners handbook, I've got the Continentals on the front & they're excellent.
I can't recall there being much choice for the back, so ended up with Toyos.

Edit... Just noticed in my 96 handbook, the original tyres are 225/45 on the front & 235/50 rears.

As an update to this old thread.....having recently re-acquired my 4.2 Cerb, bought new by me in 1997, I am putting it back onto original 16 inch Saturn alloys (a controversial move as most owners like 18 inch Spiders). As the tyre choice is limited these days I'd be grateful to hear what other owners use/recommend for 16 inch alloys.
I'm thinking of buying Toyo TR1's.
Thanks

Would we be able to get away with 225/50 instead of the standard 225/45 on the fronts ?

That would open up a whole lot of better tyres along with the proper speed ratings.

Since my previous post I have moved my other car off the 16" wheels on to extremely expensive used 17" Cup 2, this means both cars now use exactly the same AD08R in exactly the same sizes - 235/40/17 and 255/40/17

Never looked back, both cars are superb on track, and no sacrifice in comfort, noise or refinement at all

Interesting, my 97 4.2 came with RL7's

Are these the same used on Griffs and Chims? What do those owners use?

Possibly the first owner made a special request for RL7's when they ordered their car. RL7's weren't on the options list from the factory at the time. Griffiths used Estorils from 1994 and Chims used Imolas or Estorils, both 15/16 inch front/rear.

Tyre sizes recommended by the factory changed over time.
In 1996, when I specced up my car, they advised Bridgestone 225/45ZR16 front, 235/50ZR16 rear for the 4.2 (which was the only Cerbera available then).
In 1997 the recommended sizes were:
4.2 - 225/45ZR16 front, 245/45ZR16 rear
4.0 - 225/50ZR16 front & rear
4.5 - 235/40ZR17 front, 255/40ZR17 rear
I think the 4.0 was marketed as being more of a grand tourer which may explain why 50 aspect ratio tyres were specified. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So, for the 16 inch alloys the tyre choices are limited, especially if you want the same make/tread pattern on from/rear, which I do. Toyo TR1, which is an update of the T1-R, is available. These are supposed to have a stiffer sidewall. I've read reports on some threads where owners have criticised the T1-R's for being to soft when cornering hard. Interested to hear what other owners think.

Yes the 4.0 came with the 50s front and rear. Originally they were a goodyear eagle and rode superbly. Quite the best of the bunch. They had limited grip though, but drifted beautifully.

And were supposedly fitted with a slower steering rack

Except the rack and steering arms are shared with the original 4.2 and 4.5 (according to TVR-Parts), so how is that achieved?

What size?

Somehow my 4.5 has 16" RL7s! They suit it well though.
