My Saturdays Unschedule breakdown seems to be something to go with the timing chain
Don't believe it snapped But Won't know until I removed the cover
So my question is They much oil When removing the cover
And what damage am i looking at if snapped Apart from f@@k engine

There should be relatively little oil when you remove the cover.

Come on Gents - whats happening with all these AJPs breaking!

I keep thinking, I love my Cerb and I love the Speed 6 but but but but maybe if a 4.5RR came up for sale, maybe I would change - all these breaking AJPs is putting me off!

Most of the breakages these days are valve head/bucket/cam related stuff. What's the thoughts on having a top end refresh as a precaution if your car's done say 80k miles and your valves are stretched and yer shims're thin? When they break the ensuing damage = much higher cost to repair.

Sorry to add another,4.5 with mushroomed intake valve stem, luckily found before further damage done cheers for that Joolz !!

Car has only done 51k with full history and was making near as damn 400 bhp on jules dyno with short induction and re-map.

She is now with Andy at APM none of the other valves had obvious issues and head was fine so looks like a one off dodgy valve.

Hopefully pick her up a week on Saturday, oh and while the engine was out I went for the full refresh and 4.7 conversion.
biggrin

I think everyone just need to get them rebuilt as a 4.7! We could get a great deal on 20 engines!!!

No they appear regular on here unfortunately, they are not as bulletproof as the AJP police would have you believe I'm afraid.

Regular? You will have to remind us then because I'm struggling to think of more than 3

Why do this to yourself? Just starting the s6 debate that you hate.

Ladies - we'll get enough reliability japes from the Suzuki Swift fan club.

Both the AJP8 and Speed 6 are/were low volume, very high performance engines which have both demonstrated relatively small issues which if not attended to will wreck the engine. The Speed 6 is more famous for it's issues, probably due to the greater volumes made.

Now would anyone like to compare AJP8 or Speed 6 failure stats and rebuild costs with Porsche liquid cooled engine stats?

I am up for this, I am just waiting the delivery of bits from the US before I start my 4.7 rebuild. Mine has done 45k miles no real issues but the head gaskets have been on the old girl for nearly 15 years now and are starting to weep coolant up a couple of head bolts, not a failure just getting old. Still did over 1000miles in her last week though with not a single problem, this included several hours stuck in a traffic jam near Gent followed but a couple of hours of making up time, that bit was fun.

My Voyager destroyed its engine at 6k and my pug it's turbo at 94k. Why don't we all just chuck 5k of our hard earned cash into the bin when we knock our cars.

Mine has done 98K miles now, had a rebuild around the 50K mark and has just recently had the head gaskets replaced. For an engine thats pushing out 427 BHP and is regularly doing trackdays, so running at the higher end of the rev range, it's not doing so bad.

lol - correct, its not just us. I am not sure whos paranoia is worse, mine with the Speed6 or my mate with his 911. Scored bores seems to be his favorite worry. He seemed to be convinced that if he topped up is oil with the wrong grade it would instantly go bang last week.

Is that a snapped crank shaft ? What lies beneath is the question
