Re-lining clutch plates
Discussion
Has anyone ever found anywhere that will do this or know the spec thickness of a new plate?
I have my gearbox out and clutch off to track down a clattering noise (unsuccessfully so far
) and am loathe to put a part worn clutch back on the car. Given the cost of a new unit I was wondering about the possibilities of getting new friction material riveted on to the existing plates. Annoyingly, I know I measured up the thickness of the new plates when I last changed the clutch, but I seem to have misplaced the measurements.

I had the friction plate for my other car relined by Jim Jack Services, N Lanarkshire, as a new plate was £220, and the reline was about £70.I have my gearbox out and clutch off to track down a clattering noise (unsuccessfully so far

I subsequently swapped it out for a nearly new used disc costing £50. Fortunately the clutch design of the 928 is so elegant that even I can swap the clutch in under three hours, and I am very slow.
I don't understand the design of the AP discs, so it's quite possible that this would not be an issue.

New friction material is 3.1mm per half of plate or 7.3mm for one plate, but if I hold the halfs of the plate together it goes down to 7.0mm. I have my gearbox out and clutch off to track down a clattering noise (unsuccessfully so far

Have you checked the chassis rails for signs of the exhaust manifolds rubbing, probably...

Excellent info - much appreciated, thank you!I've got a new one sat on the shelf waiting to go in, if you want any other measurements let me know.

I wish it were the exhaust rattling, but it is definitely either gearbox or clutch. I can reproduce it by turning the prop shaft by hand when the car is in gear but with the clutch down (engine off and back jacked up). Out of gear it is fine.
Having just opened up the gearbox I have found that the "uprated" bronze selector fork bushes that I replaced the plastic ones with when I rebuilt the box have worn badly. The fluid is full of bronze powder and one of the bushes on 4th gear has worn nearly through. I hope that is the cause of clatter because I can't find anything else wrong. All the clearances/preloads are bang on.
