I'm afraid it's Terminal....

Wash it away with very hot water, dry the area and then put some copper crease or Vaseline on the terminals.
I think the growth is caused by having a bad connection somewhere, I don't know why, I don't know what it even is but I know that one of my cars used to do it all the time and even cleaning it only removed it for a little while, when I changed the engine earth lead and did the chassis to battery lead it stopped doing it.

Sorry to dig this one back up but I always like to finish the documentation off.....
It transpired that the battery casing had "released" the terminal and therefore the contents had been breathing all over the area producing this build up.
Recommendation: Do NOT buy 'Rocket' batteries.

Nice pic!
Just for your records, as Jhonno said:
No1 goes directly to the starter motor, there is another smaller cable that runs from that terminal on the starter back up to the alternator via the big fuse. So that big cable also charges the battery.
No2 is the power feed back into the car for all of its electrical systems.
