Hello All,

Ever since I've owned the car (2 years) my frost warning light has always shown red, I know why (the sensor is broken), but I don't view it as essential so it's at the bottom of my 'to do' list. I know the circuit works as I've tested it by shorting the circuit at the sensor mount - the result being the light went out.

It's been lightly raining since 5pm last night and I had no option but to leave the car outside overnight (normally garaged). This morning on the way to work I noticed the warning light change from red, to orange, then green and eventually after flickering it went off completely. If it had been water in the sensor mount I'd expect the light to go out, but that fact that it went through the colours in sequence concerns me.

Does anyone know what this circuit is controlled by (ECU/control module/etc...) and where that is? Or alternatively offer any ideas why it's doing this?

Regards,
Olly

Its water in the sensor. The sensor varies resistance with temperature so as water is seeping into your broken one the resistance is changing, hence the different colours.

OK thanks, so there's no chance that water in the passenger footwell could be the issue?

I had to remove my battery retaining bracket (until I get a chance to modify it to suit the new bigger battery) leaving two holes in the battery compartment. I temporarly filled and taped over the holes but it seems to have leaked a bit. I checked it this morning and although theres a trace of water in the carpet the ECU and other modules are dry. I'm just paranoid. I've driven the car in the rain before and it's never done this before!

There is always a chance that water in the passenger footwell can cause strange things!! Though the symptoms fit perfectly with it being the sensor getting damp so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I would however want to be very certain that the engine ECU is completely dry, possibly taking the lid off and drying it out with a hair dryer if necessary. Water in the multiway plug to the ECU can also do strange things.
