The time has come to replace my German diesel burner with something a lot more fun.

My daily commute now consists of a 10 mile round trip, and Im not using the cerb during a Cornish winter !!

These are my criteria any suggestions or words of wisdom gratefully received :

Budget 6k
Minimum 300bhp
4 seats (for the little darlings)
MPG not an issue

I've always had a fondness for the S Type R and the E46 M3 ????

I'd go for the M3, I used to bang my head on the door frame every time I got in my S type

Jaguar x308 XJR

The XJR is powered by the supercharged version of the 4.0 L V8. It is also equipped with sport suspension, wider wheels and tires, and matte-black exterior window trim (except in the US market, where the XJR was given chrome window frames and rain gutters.) Like the Sport model, the XJR has a body-coloured radiator grille surround, but with a stainless-steel mesh insert rather than the normal vanes. Other exterior touches include the "XJR" rear badging and larger exhaust outlets.

The XJR was capable of reaching 60 mph (97 km/h) from a standstill in 5 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h).

Silent, comfortable & fast.

An E500 is no AMG and isn't (particularly in 5.0 for as opposed to 5.5) all that special. For the money, an XJR really does take some beating, it covers all the bases so well. I'm pleased with my A8, but it might not be exciting enough for you. smile

We use a 2001 ML55 AMG as our winter hack, good performance and a great noise.

I would have the Impreza great fun for the money. I wouldn't think you will get that good an m3 for 6k.

Jag XJR also gets my vote.

My Clio200 is going tomorrow frown and I'm tempted to get an XJR to replace it with. Just think it would be cool to have three British V8's on the driveway!

yes I agree. I wouldn't mind swapping my two German V8s for a Bentley Arnage and a Supercharged Range Rover to keep the TVR company. cool
Meanwhile, back on planet earth....laugh

I'd vote S-Type R. Lovely as the XJR is, the S-Type is a bit more agile. Depends how you're orientated though - I could happily drive either.

There all good cars it's just going to come down to which one floats your boat, Jag is a great car I'm sure but just not my type of car. Had an Impreza WRX for 5 years and loved it ! Great winter car to with 4wd it's as practical as they get.

My shed gets used for the long boring motorway work drives, and as such a wafter is I find the most relaxing for this, so with this in mind either an E series Merc or the Jag would get my vote but if 5 miles each way is all you do then why not use the Cerb and keep the old girl well used?

Thanks Guy's

Ive come to the conclusion that it would be stupid not to have two 4.2v8's in the fleet, so i think im going with the S type R.

I had a ride in one yesterday and loved it, although im thinking it needs to be a little noisier out back !!!
