4 years later my Bosch is now dead. Reading through the archives on battery choice has been very useful in narrowing me down to the following:

Yuasa Pro 'old style' 072 - 70Ah / 570CCA
http://www.justcarbatteries.co.uk/index.php/yuasa-...

Bosch 086 74Ah / 680CCA
http://www.justcarbatteries.co.uk/index.php/bosch-...

The Bosch has the better spec (+ 4 years warranty) so it seems the better choice? My only concern is the length.

I have read people have fitted them fine but also that the scuttle panel may not go in correctly down by the airbox as the 086 is 278mm long. Is the normal retaining bracket also useless with this battery?

Thanks.

Hi Adam,

I recently fitted the Bosch 086 and you are right, it's the length that's the problem. I had to remove the mounting lip on the outboard end of the battery AND modify the battery clamp by extending the slotted holes. The nuts on the bolts that hold the battery clamp are a real back breaking bugger to get to (you need to be head first & upside down in the passenger footwell!). As you also correctly pointed out, it makes for an extremely tight fit to the scuttle panel too!

I was stuck with a dead battery on a Sunday afternoon, the local stockist only had the latest Yuasa (too tall) or the Bosch so I was kind of forced into it.

If the old style Yusara fits 'straight out of the box' I'd highly recomend saving yourself a whole load of hassle!

Regards,
Olly

Thanks Olly,

Like you I suspect, I was looking forward to a drive out on sunny Sunday - all plugged in on the CTEK as well but battery basically dead...

Yes I think the Yuasa is a straight swap as its the older style 072. I just liked higher spec and 4yr warranty on the Bosch but it sounds like quite a hassle from what you have said so maybe its more trouble than its worth.

I just put one of these in (it is a Bosch battery HSB075 - I don't know why the pic is Yuasa):
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

Fits great and seem to really kick the starter over. Best of all it has a 5 year guarantee so it should be the last battery I buy for the Cerb.

I've recently fitted the Bosch 086 in my old 4.2
My battery clamp etc is already missing, so I removed the Air Box & the battery fitted perfectly.

£73.50 from justcarbatteries, delivered F.O.C next day.

My battery clamp is missing too. How does your battery avoid horizontal movement in cornering - is it just pushed up against the metal water pipe?

I think I will have to make up a new bracket for mine. Another job for the list.

Aha, thought something was missing wink Shouldn't be too hard to knock something up. Cheers for the info!

I quite like the look of this one Tim, decent cold crank power even if 60Ah is a little on the low side, but I keep mine on a trickle charger so not as important.
As you say a 5 year warranty is good, Cerbs eat batteries normally quicker than that! A few kg lighter as well at 15kg. Should easily fit.

Exactly, a Cerbera will eat a battery about every three years, four at a push so I am keeping the guarantee receipt Halfords give you safe and will be back for a new one in about 3-4 years time.

Plus - it fits without cutting down lugs or removing battery clamps.

Don't forget to photocopy the receipt as they fade... wink

A combo of the power cables and water pipe at the bottom, the air box at the top.

Even with the latter removed, the new battery had to go in at a 45 degree angle.... That battery isn't going anywhere, neither did the last one smile

When it comes to batteries I'd take Yuasa over Bosch all day long.

Aren't the terminals the wrong way round on the Yuasa?

I have an exide battery. Perfect fit terminals right way round.

I have a spare battery bracket should someone need it. I replaced it when I made a stainless one.

I'm sure I found images or a spec for the Yuasa 086, when I was mooching for one, and the terminals were in the correct position.

Even though I bought a Bosch, I've been in the Alarm security industry since the 80's and Yuasa was always the Daddy, when it came to sealed lead acid.

I think it was the extra 30CCA that swayed me towards the Bosch.

Peter do you have a link or part number for that exide?
I might take you up on that bracket off but I may also have something made at work in Ali...

Confusingly that link Tim posted for the Bosch actually points to a Yuasa, but it says at the bottom a Bosch may be supplied instead. Are they effectively the same unit rebranded?

Yuasa 86.... http://www.justcarbatteries.co.uk/index.php/yuasa-...

Picture in the image shows the terminals as being incorrect, but check out the description & Yuasa's site.
