Austec - Genius or Lucky?
Discussion
Had a call from Mike at Austec last week, out of the blue. Conversation went something like;
"I've been thinking of ways to get a Cerb closer to the stated bhp from TVR. Mark Adams & ourselves have a plan and we're looking for a test-bed (read guinea pig!) car to try our ideas out on. You up for it Nick?" "Ermm, tell me more" goes I.
"Well, along with the Austec/Mark Adams remap, we want to change your injectors for Bosch ones. We hope to push the power to very close to 400bhp. What do you think?"
"Mike, put the f
g phone down NOW and order the parts FFS".
"Okay" says Mike, "see you Wednesday"
Dropped the car off at 9.30 this morning. Having some other work done so not collecting until Friday. 2.30pm get a call from Mike " Nick, I have some news". Oh God I think, they've broken it or its flown off the rolling road and gone through the back wall at 150mph.
"We've got the car to just break through the 400bhp barrier, but think we may get a little more with some tweeks"
What?
"Mike, dont sit here telling me that, get on with it, I'm fit to burst here"
Mike calls back at 4pm to tell me the final figures are 409.6 bhp and 430ish lb of torque (cant remember the actual figure, I was still shocked at the power figure). To say I'm chuffed would be an understatement!
Aparantly Paul at Austec has just got back from the test drive, grinning like a simpleton. He says it's the quickest Cerb he has driven (I know there are quicker ones out there, but Im happy to have the quickest to go through Austec's oily mits
)
Not sure if I can wait till Friday to have the other bits done, I want to try the car out for myself

Most excellent news there. I just can see Mike now bursting to tell you
. I know Paul has been itching for along time to 'try' some things out and for him to say it is the quickest he has driven is something very significant IMHO.
Well done to the boys at Austec, again
.
Out of interest what figures did it start with
.
Note to self, must keep saving for that cerb, but need to finishing tweeking the S first though, I will be back soon

Genius IMHO.
Paul just seems to have an ear for tuning... was very interesting watching setup my old S on the rollers (admittedly not in the same league power wise, but the principle is the same).
Was always happy with the service I received at Austec from Paul and Mike, and they also make a cracking brew.
better start saving to have the Chimaera tinkered with...

Absolutely zilch (well, none that Austec have confessed to, maybe they cheated and put some NOS in there, LOL). Apart from a much needed service about 3 weeks ago, when they RR'd the car and it showed 349 bhp at the flywheel, which I was happy with at the time.
But being a greedy
, I couldnt resist the opportunity to see what else could be freed under the bonet.

. Pure Genius without a doubt
.
All credit to Paul and I believe Mark Adams was there too, perhaps he is branching out into the AJP8 too, which can only be very good news for all cerb owners IMHO. ALthoaugh that does mean he'll have less time to do the RV8's though
Why didnt Joolz come up with such a simple mod?????
Not sure what you are trying to say here
.
AFAIK Paul has been playing with remapping the existing ECU for a while and had a race speck cerb in the garage for months
. I assume now he has cracked it
.
Are the Bosch injectors bigger injectors or better injectors I do not know. Are they only required for this level of power I do not know .
I'm sure Joolz is on the phone as we speak/type as this is an area he has been involved with Austec in the past.

I suppose the question on most people's lips as well as mine is how much did this tinkerfest come to?
Ahh, well, now there's a story! Dont know the final figure as the guys (not sure if I should post this) are going to 'do me a deal' as I was the guinea pig and they were'nt totally sure at the time if they could get the power this high. However, I'm sure Mike will post a correct figure. I dont want to go guessing at a figure then Mike fills the petrol tank with sugar for speaking out of turn

Ah you've obvioulsy spoken to him already then![]()

Well not about that, he did read my post and tell me to go try the car for myself tomorrow. Just trying to juggle some appointments to see if I can get over there.
Running the risk of the car turning diabetic if Mike puts any sugar in the system, a total guess is somewhere between £1-2k, nearer the middle than the 2 extremes. :ducksforcover: but dont quote me on it (the injectors are about £600 on their own)

That's because it isn't a simple mod!
A lot of midnight oil, dyno time, and computer resources have been deployed to unravel the secrets of the MBE.
On our travels, we have discovered that the MBE traction control appears to be lurking in there too. With genuine 400+BHP monsters unleashed, this may be desirable if it can be done.

Hmmm, ok, painstakingly time consuming mod... but I suppose you have all the settings you need now - so when does the upgrade become available to the cerb community - and - will this mod make a difference to the speed 6's output too???
MBE traction feature? now thats interesting.... I'm sure many would be interested in that one.... I assume its legally ok with MBE to enable hidden features? (who cares hehe)
What model bosch injectors are you using? whats the flow rate? i can see you making some gooood money on this upgrade - pound for pound - it sounds a far better alternative to the emerald ecu upgrade.... hmmmm....
The comment about why joolz earlier - this is why he needs rollers! I will look into it and see if I can get him a good deal for a rolling road installation...

Good to see your still busy exploring the bounds of TVRdom Mark. I hope this doesn't mean you'll be too wrapped up in cerb MBE's to talk Lucas/Omex RV8's
