Starting Issue

Well,

Having a issue starting up the Cerb. All I seem to get is the fuel pump priming, a single click then more priming. Can see the alternator move slightly as with the air con unit, but its a short jitter then it gives up and the fuel pump kicks in. I thought, maybe the battery has died, so disconnected the battery and switched in new one using jump leads but this does not seem to have had any real effect, just the same symptoms.

Holding down the start button and i get either rarely get a short series of rapid clicks 8-12 of them, then it gives up and primes, or the majority of the time, a single click followed by fuel pump over and over.

Any ideas of what to do next?

Fairly sure testing with a new battery should of solved it, but it had virtually no effect (and i charged it before testing). Whats the best points to test the connections?

Battery or immobiliser starter relay has died.

If it is not the immob ( worth pulling the helmet holder out and giving it a light chap) could be the starter Bendix as I have found out this week. Mine has split the gear and spat some teeth out same click but little engine turning over, once stripped down the starter itself is fine.

Check that you have battery voltage on the big fuse or back of alternator, you will have quite a drop in voltage if you are connecting the charged battery to the car with jump leads and the old battery will also be pulling the voltage down if still connected.

The winner was a voltage drop from the jump leads.

In a last ditch attempt aided by a small torch in the pitch black (while cursing the fact I had not thought to replace the lighting in the garage) I removed the air box switched out the battery completely with a new and she lives again.
