Hi, as you probably know I'm looking for my first cerb. I wanted to know your opinions on the best sounding engine. I have been put off the sp6 for rebuild reasons, but want to know if there's much difference between the sound of the 4.2 and 4.5. I want the banging and popping backfire and am led to believe you only get this from the 4.5?

All TVR's will pop and bang with the right set up.

My 4.5 is decatted and has the full big bore sports system from ACT.

It pops, bangs and spits flames for fun! smile

Drove mine cross country today to drop it off at JP Exhausts in Macclesfield, to get the ACT big bore fitted as it should be. Don't Audis come out to play when a real car is out?
Anyway I couldn't stop it popping and thats before it has a decent exhaust fitted.

Oh, and its only a little speed six poor old thing.furious

I am sick to death of people moaning about a speed6, claiming oooh those rebuild issues,
ITS BEEN 14 YEARS THERE OR THERE ABOUTS, IF ITS GONNA BLOW, ITS GONNA BLOW, NOT BECAUSE THERE WERE KNOWN ISSUES 14 YEARS AGO, ITS LIKE MOANING ABOUT THE ORIGINAL TYRES BEING A LITTLE WORN DOWN. GET OVER IT.
Rant over.

Not much came passed me today it was a smooth comfortable blast and i loved it.
Buy a 6, cheaper than the others, for some reason. But I won't know if it sounds like screamin banshee, or the devil in burble mode until next Friday.
Cheers Karl

The Speed Six in my old Tuscan was unrivalled, completely unrivalled. Decatted with the backboxes removed and sports cans, it was complete and utter armageddon. The overrun was spectacular and sounded like endless machine gun fire. Both of my V8s have been decatted with sports exhausts (JP), perhaps my rose tinted spectacles are fitted but I recall the 4.2 sounding a little nicer.

Don't get me wrong mate, I'm not knocking the 6 (who am I to knock anything, I don't own a cerb yet!). I've been asking for advice on buying on other threads and had a lot of people telling me to steer clear. But you're an owner so you can prove me wrong, and I know the speed can't be rivalled and I've owned flat 6 Porsches before and the revving is unrivalled. All I want is a (reasonably) reliable engine that sounds like the devil with a headache. On cocaine. In a bad mood. With murder on the agenda!

Thing I don't get is a S6 will cost you about 5k less than the equivalent 4.5. Yet for just over that Dom will rebuild you a S6 that will be good for 100k miles+, so whats not to like about the S6's

There is stuff all to choose between the engines, their chalk and cheese but each is has it own good and bad points. Both sound awesome, my S6 pops like crazy even just letting off the throttle to change gear usually unleashes hell from the pipes

I would try both and see which your prefer. Yes a S6 might go pop but it will have cost you less to begin with. The V8 might go pop as well, their good for TVR reliability wise, but they ain't Honda reliable

I bought my S6 2 and half years ago (no rebuild) and was convinced it would go bang on the drive home. Still waiting, had a 12k service this year and was given a clean bill of health. Keep putting cash away is a slush fund, so if it goes pop this year its coming back as a 4.3 evil

i forgot to say.... I think a Cerbera needs to have the AJP, 4.2 or 4.5 whatever... as long long as it has the AJP.

But that is just me...

I have owned a 400 rv8 chim a red rose Tuscan and my 4.2 ajp cerb

Tvr never made a bad sounding car, the chim was a real bruser when it hit 4500rpm, my mate heard me coming over 2 miles away with its sleaved exhaust on BBQ nights hehe.

The cerb is silly on over run pops and bangs on command silly silly

Now the sp6 in my Tuscan de cated, my god thunder ear bleaddig everyone thought it was a v8 or a bike hehe a cracking engine I loved it most I think.

I presume you don't intend to try to get past any track day noise tests. There are only two tracks I can use my car without track day cans (which completely strangle the top end), Anglesey and Nurburgring. With cans on I am so close to 105dB that is touch and go on other tracks. I agree the noise is quite fun 5% of the time, the rest of the time it just gives me a headache. Hopefully when I get rid of the sports tails things will be much better.

There's not a lot that sounds like a speed six wound up. Your going to have to spend serious dough to beat that sound.

My old Tuscan had CCC's but still had the cats in, sounded great though I possibly would have taken the cats out too if I had kept it. It was however drowned out by a 4.5 cerbera on a back road home one day. Not sure what the setup was though subsequently found out it was a 4.5.

I think both engines are great and i'd be happy with both but in my opinion the Cerbera suits the AJP and T cars suit the Sp6.

Though in saying all of above, a 4.3/4.5 upgrade speed 6 would scare the majority of V8 Cerbs.
