A while ago i posted that i thought my car was sounding louder. It has got louder still, and today, after prompting from a fellow PHer, i had a look underneath her, only to find the right exhaust pipe has rotted near the joint/bracket (about a foot in from the rear) and has a gaping hole almost all way round .

Does anyone know if this can be fixed cheaply, or is it new exhaust time?

I assume you mean the inlet pipe to the rear box, quite a common problem, mine went (same place) about 3 months ago. Decided it was time to fit the sports boxes, which made it even louder!! sounds great now.
If you can drive a spanner and spare an hour (and 300 quid)its a simple job.
You could always try getting someone to internally sleeve the inlet pipe and reweld, but no guarantee the other pipe isn't ready to go.
Go for it !! good luck.

Hi Greg,

Bad luck, mate - happened to mine last year in the same place. Brian at Topcats welded it up really well for a few quid. A few months later the other one went and Brian did the honours again. Then, this year one went again followed closely by the actual tailpipe at one side falling off with a great CLONK.

Got a pair of 3" howlers made up for it this summer - they're s/s straight-throughs apart from a token can on each side (no baffles). They were 300 quid fitted and sound marvellous with the existing de-cat. I'd get it welded up if its do-able, but if not then its a golden opportunity to gets some great zorsts on there!! Best of luck.

Cheers Fellas lots of ideas there. I must say that having just footed a £2k bill recently, i was thinking for a mo whether she might have to go, but i'm not going to let a holey exhaust pipe be responsible for loosing the car of my dreams

May drive over to TopCats to see if i can get a temporary cheap fix for now, then it will soon be time for a sports exhaust once funds permit.

Dont let me play that damn CD again, its becoming a regular ritual "another one bites the dust"...

But if you do have to get rid of her due to personal circumstances - just promise you will be back with another in the near future!...

But I dont think you'll get another one that looks as good as her, other yellows tend to be too flat or look like JCB donors....

Greg,

I've got a Joolz fully rebuilt example of the original back-box living in the garage rafters at the mo. If I ever get to move house it'll be one extra thing I wish wasn't there! Let me know if you're interested.

Dave.

Cheers Daver , but i think on initial inspection is is the pipe which is corroded and not the box. I intend to have a much closer look at the weekend

Both my rear pipes fell off a little while back, and when I grabbed the pipe as it went into the rear box it broke too.

However there was not much sign of rust just inferior welds. Welded them all back on and still going strong.

Its a funny thing about welds. Most people will tell you the weld is the toughest thing on the car, and they'd be right, but its also the most brittle because the act of welding often creates a degree of tempering. Even though mig welding is very popular it suffers from this more than any other type of weld because there is no real control over the heating process.

Be careful you don't throw away a completely fine set of pipes because of faulty welding. The trick for exhausts is to find a gas welder who'll spend enough time to peheat the metal prior to the weld and allow slow cooling after.

After all the exhaust doesn't have to be very strong but it does have to withstand vibration, and therefore not be brittle.

Julian64 is spot on there.... but it could be more economically viable to get a used sports system put on

Errmm, more economical than £1.50 worth of acetyline and oxygen? Can you give me the address of these people?
