manifold wrapping, good idea?

Hi doing some work in the cerb and noticed some rust starting to appear by the main chassis rail and top tube on the drivers side that run very close to the manifold. I have had a body off and chassis work 3 years ago, and always keep an eye on it frequently to stop any rust forming again. It seems to me this area is susceptible though due to the manifold heat. i am thinking of wrapping the manifolds to reduce this. I bought some ceramic fiber tape and the HT silicone spray.

Has anyone done something similar? is it a good option? any advice would be appreciated

I had my manifolds ceramic coated, I also fitted additional heat shields that fit over the top rails right to the lower rails and extend right back to the end of the gearbox. This protect s the chassis and the occupants.

Think you might see it here in thus picture.

But wrapping would be much cheaper and I am sure it would help reduce temp in that area a lot, a worth while mod!

Thanks for that, also concidering some sort of shield around the chassis but worried about retention of dirt etc there,

Wrapping will reduce the temperature a lot more than ceramic coating does BUT it is nothing like as robust and once wrapped, it makes working on or near the manifold a horrible and itchy experience.

Once exhaust wrap has dried out it is horrible stuff to go any where near - the fibres embed themselves in your skin at the slightest touch. A facefull when you are lying under the car trying to take off the bell housing is a deeply nasty experience.

Completely agree. When the wrapping started to fall off mine (due to my incompetence) I didn't bother to put it back. Horrible stuff.

thanks, how long did it last on yours? i was planning on painting it with ht silicon spray for longevity

On mine it has lasted fine despite me pulling the gearbox. It just made it a deeply unpleasant job and the rash and itching from the fibres too a week or so to go.

As the others have said, wrapping makes a big difference to temperatures. My top tip is get someone else to do the wrapping

If wrap it wearing glows its alright. I used cable ties until i was happy before using the metal ties.

unfortunately given the tight space, a nice neat job can be ruined when trying to put them back onto the car.

Did either of you spray it afterwards?
After wrapping mine I sprayed it with some good quality exhaust paint from GPR. It wasn't cheap, but the result was very good.
Have a look at the vid in my profile and there is a pic of the stuff in it.
