chassis refurb

There are many variables Frozen. Mainly, are you going to pay for the whole to be done for you, or are you going to remove the chassis yourself?
Once the chassis is out of the car it will be blasted to remove any paint and corrosion, only then will the true condition of the chassis be known - this will directly affect the cost of the refurb.
Talking to Richard at RT, he said the cheapest refurb (bare chassis) he's done was £800, and the worse case was £1500 (+ VAT). On to that you need to factor in the cost of powder coating - £400 for all chassis related metal work and suspension.

If you are going to remove the body yourself and do all the hard work, using a local shot blasters and powder coaters would surely be a lot cheaper than sending it away. I'm cor15 my chassis to tidy up some scratches. Not found any rust even round the engine (it was last done about 6 years ago I think) so thank heavens I shouldn't need to do it for a long time. If you need any welding that's pretty easy to sort out.

From memory the repairs to my chassis came to about the £4k mark. RT had it as a bare chassis, but it was in pretty bad shape.
I pretty much had all new suspension components, new standard bushes and every nut and bolt replaced....also had them re-build to rolling chassis level, total bill in the end was around £6k (+ the lovely 20% vat). So I wouldn't go into this with a set figure in mind as it will increase!

Trust me, I'm not going into this blind. My chassis is certainly nowhere near as bad as some I've seen on here, wheeler dealers or sites like Willow Sports cars gallery, but of course the true horror of the situation wont reveal itself until I take the body off this weekend. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the top rails are in the region of the exhaust manifolds. I even mused the idea of it not actually needing a full refurb yet, but I'm too down the road now to back out!

Most of the front end forward of the dashboard mounting bolts was replaced and the comedy outriggers.
I did the minimal welding my self, then I uesd a local place to blast & power coat mine, was only £200.
It looked very good for a few weeks but very quicky it became obvious they hadn't rotated it when blasting & they missed the bits pointing down. I ended having to re-blast & spray loads of it my self. Using someone who's done it before would be a very good idea!
With all the new parts used the total spend has been at least £5k even doing everything my self.

Hate to say it, but the guys are right. Body off and total, and I mean total refurb on mine was close to £6.5K. The photos of the chassis condition were frightening, the body was effectively holding the rust, sorry chassis, together!!
I also had a lot of ancillary replacement bits while the car was in pieces, so the whole bill came to £10.4K in the end.
Warren and Brian at Topcats did mine, and a jolly good job they made of it as well.
As an aside I had an add up of all the bills (excluding Fuel, tax, insurance and MOT's) on mine over the 11 year period I have owned the car and it turned out to be £38,066 with an additional purchase price of £20250. Over £60K. I initially winced at the grand total, but after considering all the enjoyment (and the experiences and memories of banishing other alleged fast cars during the ownership) I really dont regret the expenditure at all.
