On the list of jobs to do while tracking a rear crank seal leak was to inspect the clutch slave (along with refurbished water rails & cracked manifolds - another post to come)

Background.
Owner before me had a new clutch & slave fitted (1st in the cars history @ 40k) a few years ago & not much mileage. I was informed the system was running silicone fluid.

A few months afar I took charge, amongst other drips was the dreaded clutch fluid spot on the drive. Turning into a few drips within a couple of years about 30mm in size on a cardboard drip tray.

So here are my findings on a slave failure with little use.

The area behind the bearing piston was full of fluid, which overflowed down the front of the bellhousing where the slave bolts to.
nb. The clutch fluid was 'clean' when drained
It was apparent no rubber grease was used on the seals last time as they were 'clean'
This is the state of the Release bearing piston seal

Its had a hard life! deformed and expanded, no longer square with an lip - its been battered
other seals looked fine

On closer inspection of the release bearing piston it was evident it had been rubbing, look at the polished outer ring as if the whole assembly was able to rock over and make contact with the housing.

This caused the wear in here

Difficult to see but there is a long score mark which can be felt with a finger nail as if some metal has been dragged along. The polished edge of the release bearing piston was quite rough with the odd burr.

Raceproved Slave on its way.

As a matter of interest, how many miles has the car done on that slave?

How would you describe the clutch pedal weight?

Mine used to be awful, I mean really atrociously heavy. But then I replaced the Slave with an RP unit and the AP Clutch pack at the same time - this completely transformed the driving experience. Even if it wasn't half the weight before, the change was so dramatic that it seemed it was.

The clutch pedal I would say is heavy. Like a stage one clutch on most cars.

Mine was the same v v heavy when i bought it and i was aware there could be an issue it lasted 12 months then the dreaded drip drip i had the RP slave and new AP Clutch done by RP and it was light as a feather fantastic feel changed the driving experience and still is touch wood 2 yrs later, master is next on the list!

Hi Craig. I see that's the standard slave cylinder i've got a couple of sets of seals for a standard slave. If you're interested.

Cheers Darren for the offer. Got the RP slave on back order. Loads of other bits to sort while I'm waiting, hand brake, prop paint & grease. Gearbox and bell housing clean, fuel lines, heat protect stuff, check chassis and paint bits, repair and paint manifolds, oil seal etc.
hope I can get it done for gathering in between working.
Thanks Craig.

Mine has always had a reasonably light feel to it (considering that it's a dual plate trying to control 400bhp)
BUT
since renewing the pack and fitting the RP slave the Clutch now operates more lightly than SWMBO's Pug 207.
Phenomenal !!

I rebuilt mine with standard parts & the uprated seals, but polished the piston walls to a mirror finish (like the RP kit has) it’s now the lightest clutch pedal I’ve ever used biggrin
