Hello All,

A quick question, is the clutch on Speed 6 the same as an AJP8 (4.2)?

Seeing as we are on this topic... when my car was serviced I was told it has "an early 4.2 bell-housing" which clutches are no longer available for...

Could someone more knowledgeable please explain what this means? Is the bell housing a custom unit or from something else? It is a very early 4.2... I presume mega bucks come clutch replacement time....

I have the same mines a 97 4.2, i think but im not 100% you dont need a new bellhousing just a flywheel from a 4.5. Hopefully someone will be along to clarify.

Mine's an early 4.2.. Which had a later bell housing fitted when the clutch was last done..

Luckily it was a PO's cost.. Can dig the receipt out if I remember though.

No wonder clutches no longer fit in the early ones, they're upside down!

When I had to replace my mk1 original clutch last year race proved fitted a new clutch slave to my original bell housing and machined the housing to fit the mk2 clutch, they were extremely helpful and turned it around in a couple of days. You will also need a mk2 flywheel or machine your original to make into a mk2 which has a larger recess in the centre which allows clearance on the springs on the friction plates
(I have the dimension differences if you need them).

Had the old clutch and replaced with the current version, bell housing was kept the same but had to change the flywheel

Hi ENV,
I have a 4.2 96 Cerb which has the older type bellhousing, last year i discovered clutch fluid leaking from the bottom of the bellhousing onto my garage floor, (seals failed on slave cylinder).

When i removed the gearbox to replace the slave seals I was un-pleasantly surprised to find that the clutch friction plates were well worn and should also be replaced after a bit of internet searching i decided to phone Racetech and spoke to a chap called keith, he was a great help and asked me to send him some pictures of the parts in question which i did, he confirmed that i had the earlier clutch which was no longer available and in order to fit the later clutch I would have to also change the slave cylinder as the later clutch (complete assembly) is a bit deeper than the earlier one so when it is re-assembled with the original slave cylinder the clutch slips due to the release bearing constantly pressing on the pressure plate spring arms, so a new slave cylinder was required also (the newer slave being a bit shorter).

To make it even more interesting, the later clutch assembly did not fit onto the earlier flywheel and the aperture the slave cylinder slides into on the bellhousing was to long for the newer slave. I had to get the collar of the aperture milled down from the inner side of the bellhousing so it was flush with the slave when fitted and the flywheel was skimmed in a couple of places to accept the clutch and allow the flywheel bolts to sit a bit lower so they wouldn't hit the first friction plate as it spins and wears down over time.

Its all done now and i've progressively got more confident with it, i have now done a thousand miles in it since it was all fitted and given it a bit of stick and so far so good. I could not source a later flywheel to use and i did not want to fit a lightweight flywheel as i've read that some people are not happy with them, my flywheel is probably somewhere between original and lightweight now but i think probably closer to the original as not much was taken off.
