Hello,

Took the cerb out on the weekend and there is a 'rubbing' noise from the front left brake under braking. On closer inspection there is a single line of 'rust' around the disk. I am away at a wedding this weekend so would like to get the brakes looked at ASAP but don't have a lot of time. Anyone have any ideas/recommendations where I could take the car in central London?

As always help greatly appreciated!

The line of rust could be quite normal as all discs will rust, especially around the outside. Just depends how deep the loss of braking surface has been? More likely to be a worn pad, which should be easier to fix yourself. Or just buy the pads and any decent garage will be able to do the work if you don't want to do it yourself. Just go to your local MOT man and ask them to have a look to confirm. It could be something completely unrelated.

I know KwikFit aren't usually well loved, but my recent experience (when I needed wheels balanced on Sunday morning) has been very good indeed. You also have the reassurance that if something goes wrong you can go to any branch and get the work rectified without any quibbling. Charges were competitive compared with an independent too.

Brake pads and discs are easy to do yourself, seriously. Youtube is your best friend here, it has taught me so much in this past couple of years. Even to the point where I've been swapping brakes on Subaru Impreza WRX's...

Brake pad swap is real easy yes, but best be sure its what your trouble is. They make a particular noise when worn down that is unmistakeable. So perhaps not your rubbing noise? Have a look how thick they are is an easy way to tell.

I actually used Kiwkit to fit my Decat pipes back in the day believe it or not. They do have some good lads at some places and are more than helpful when it comes to doing something a little different to Doris and her Micra!

Thanks everyone... looks like it is pads/disks. Best place to order from? and what would you fit to an early 4.2?

You probably have the small 4 bolt caliper and a 291mm disc, you could move upto 304mm using these stainless spacers we have made here.
We have the 304mm discs landing in around 6 weeks.

How much difference does the extra 13mm make? Is it really noticeable?

No it probably makes no difference in performance, pads do that bit.
But they at least look balanced to the rear, and the 291 is becoming obsolete/expensive.
