I'm in the fortunate position of having a very good mate who has a body shop. He came round last night to have a look at some corrosion on the sill tubular section. We decided that it was so close to the fibreglass that a partial lift may be required to get at it. As we checked the rest of the outrigers there wasnt anything to terrible but decided that if we were doing a partial we may as well do the whole heap and get the chassis blasted so the I can keep the car forever.

I was having a think about other jobs that are worth doing while the body is out. Any recommendations on things that are worth doing while this is happening

cheers

Essentially anything bolted to the main part of the chassis or generally difficult to get to:

  • Brake lines
  • Steering rack
  • Bushes
  • Diff
  • Aircon & oil cooler rads
  • Fuel lines
The rest of it comes down to the size of your budget!!!

Get the diff rebuilt/checked as that is a pig of a job. also brake and fuel hoses would be a must. On the chassis work when it comes to it I'm going to replace my outriggers and pipes round the exhaust with stainless pipe as powdercoating will never last forever and these areas will always be prone to wear and rusting

Are there any parts of the chassis that benefot from modification? I don't mean wholesale restructuring, but weak spots that a little extra webbing etc might help with?

I must admit that I can't recall having seen any comments suggesting it, but if you have access, it's worth thinking about...

In addition to the other things listed above, I'm currently doing:

Clutch
Engine bay/tunnel heat shield
Stainless water pipe upgrade
New exhaust manifolds

Thanks for the advice folks, brake lines, fuel lines and bushes i'll do for sure. Mentioned to my pal about the diff and the clutch, will inspect the diff. He mentioned about getting the clutch refaced with an organic material reckons it;ll work out cheaper because i'll be keeping the parts and be harder wearing because of the facing that goes on. Anyone done this or disagree at all?

I know at least one person on here (can't remember who) replaced the friction material and re-used the other parts. I looked into this as the company he used (http://www.autoandindustrial.co.uk/) is fairly local to me, I think it was going to be about £300 from memory.

But for me, the bigger issue was that the fingers on my diaphragm plate had worn to razor sharp blades against the slave thrust bearing. A replacement plate is £225 from one of the main parts suppliers. I bought a second hand clutch assembly with 1200 miles for less.

My outgoing clutch which has covered about 30,000 miles had only lost about 0.75mm in friction material over the 1200 mile unit.

http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk/ made a great job of re-lining my clutch. Cost around £300 as well
