Have very dim main beam, high beam fine, heard some talk of this being caused by relay in boot being damaged, burnt out, does this sound about right?

Also I presume this would definitely be an MOT failure?

This looks like the culprit! Do I need to replace the whole box of Gubbins or just wire on a new connector?

I was wondering if these relays could be just removed and a standard relay board wired in with just standard off the shelf components? Would make our lives so much easier and last longer?

Good idea, anyone know if this is feasible?

The problem isn't the board or relays - its the connectors. They are marginal for the power going through them and they always seem to burn out on the same pin. I soldered in separate wires to bypass the burnt out pins and put suitably rated bullet connectors on them.

So did you just solder directly onto the pin on the board? My connector also has burnt wires here and I would like to by pass them. I was just going to cut all the wires back and fit a seperate relay, but as you say the board does look OK. Just need to bypass the connector.

I fixed Fubar's headlights by soldering to the pins a long time back and as far as I'm aware there have been no subsequent issues. On mine I drive a pair of relays fed from the battery using the headlight wiring to perform the switching.

Cheapest fix I've ever had on the car, cost me 2 cups of tea and a doughnut smile

Yes - I soldered a wire directly onto the connector pin on the board. Then drilled a neat hole in the box next to the plug for the wire to come through.
