Quick question but is anyone else finding that clutches just don't last?

My latest one is worn and needs replacing and has only managed around 5 K miles, the last one was the same, the one before that 30k before it needed replacing. There is nothing wrong with the seals it is simply that the friction material seems to be made of something slightly more useless than chocolate.

Both my clutches have been supplied by Powers Performance and I believe that Racing Green have had some made, does any one have experience of these and if so are they better as I am getting fed up of the clutch being a service item like an oil filter?

Right let's stop and get to the point.

Send said clutch & flywheel assembly to,
http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk

THESE ARE AP MOTORSPORT
APPROVED CENTRE.

I sent mine to them, the flywheel and pressure plates had hot spots and the friction plates were contaminated with oil from a crank seal leak.
They put new linings on the plates, refaced the flywheel and pressure plates, balanced it, tested it on their test machine, cleaned etc.
Once they were happy with it they charged me £198 delivered.

Feeling epic at the saving ( being a Yorkshireman) I put the flywheel on the shelf as a spare, and bought a raceproved lightweight one mmmmm...

Jut spoken to them and they seemed very helpful and had good knowledge.

I am going to send the clutch up to them, when they recieve it they will give me a ring to discuss options.

So far very happy with the service.

Keep us posted. That sounds a bargain. I too suffer from short clutch life. makes my 14K from the last one seem good mileage!

Another firm recommendation for those guys. They did a great job of refurbishing my clutch plates and their helpfulness and service was brilliant.

Second hand clutch ordered, I will send this off to be refurbed next week and will report back on what they say and do.

Then only time will tell if it lasts.

Sounds like a good service. I must be dam lucky or a mild mannered driver, mines on 42000, 26000 I have driven and never had a clutch, however it is just started feeling difficult to engage over the last 1000. These guys do a lot of different types of clutch, so I guess I'll be giving them a call if I need one.

My first lasted 35K, subsequent two have managed about 5K each. The one in my old plodder going to work and back lasted 225K miles so I am not in the habit of riding clutches.

I will have a spare worn clutch in the not too distant future, we could use this as a forum spare so it can get sent off for refurbishment to the requirements of the next person without the wait to take one out send it off and then refit. This would reduce time off the road.

Bought my '01 4.5 with a new Clutch as part of the purchase deal (supplied and fitted by David Gerald's) and the thing lasted over 50K before three fingers broke.
Now I generally don't do much dropping her at 5K revs but I do a load of doble de-clutches so I'd call that fantastic reliability. I replaced with an AP unit supplied by Clever Trevor but it was half the price of the figures they're quoting here.

That is why I have brought the second hand unit so I can send it to them to take a look at and come up with a recommendation while still using my car with what is starting to feel like a worn clutch.

I will then do the swap and get the existing clutch refurbished.

I had a lot of issues with the my RP lightened flywheel. It warped after about 3K miles and I know its not the only one to do it. The flywheel became bowed a bit like the shape of a Frisbee. You then get the symptoms of a faulty clutch as it does not disengage cleanly. In my opinion its a race flywheel and not suitable for the road and heavy traffic where the clutch is used a lot.
