Interesting chat with the factory re potential rebuild of engine. Told if any damage found to block, I would need a new 4.5 engine as the 4.2 block is no longer available. Not sure if this is news or known already, but be careful with your lumps out there.

I believe they've actually been using 4.5 blocks for all engines for some years.

Fair enough, but it was interesting that it was put to me on the basis of the engine is dead and a full new one needed if block is damaged on a 4.2. It makes sense though, as you wouldn't necessarily want to put any worn bits into a new block, but at approx £8k plus VAT for a new 4.5 engine, a potentially large bill.

Isnt the block the same then, and just the stroke different?

I think this is the case, as my 4.2 has the dipstick at the back, whereas later engines have it at the front. Also TVR offer a 4.2 to 4.5 conversion, the main part of which is a new crank.

I'd be happy to rebuild my engine on its 4.2 block, crank etc. they would've all been through many heat cycles.

As I recently found out to my cost, this is due to the fact that the first couple of years models had the sump plug at the bottom (dipstick at the back) & the 98 onwards (I think) 4.2 & 4.5's share the same sump, plug at the side, dipstick at the front.

My old 4.2 had a new sump at some point before I had the car. Before the sump was changed the dipstick was off to one side, afterwards it was at the front. The block was not changed.

Hang on a minute....mine's a 96 4.2 and the dipstick is very definitely at the front.
Confused.

Gents

To fuel to the fire, here is what happened on my Rebuild.

I have a 96 4.2 which suffered from a bottom end mulching which required the replacing of both block and crank. The crank could have been reground but the only bloacks available at that time from the factory were the new blocks which have larger journal bearings (I believe it went up from 1.25 inches to 1.5) as such my old crank would't fit. The new blocks of the 4.2 and 4.5 are the same, as such I was able to use a reconditioned block from a 4.5 and a new 4.2 crank without any problems. However, my sump was carried over and My dipstick is still in the same position i.e. at the back of the engine.
SO if you own an old 4.2 and the block goes you cannot use your old crank if you get a new block. Cost to you about 3K for a block and crank, plus the cost for somebody to rebuild the top end and put it back. Maybe somebody should get out there and start scouring the scrappies for old 4.2's now.

Funny you should say that...

Maybe I'm the dipstick but front of engine is towards the pointy end of the car no?

It is, yours has had an engine rebuild at some point.

Not necessarily. It could have had a new sump or a broken dipstick.
