Just a question re number plates:

If someone buys a car with a private number plate attached and registers the V5 with that number, does that number plate become the property of the cars new owner? Sorry if this is a stupid question..

1) Nobody technically ever owns a number plate, they remain the property of HM government. You have the right to use it!
2) Dunno if this helps. But I recently sold a car with cherished plate before putting the plate on retention. Yes the plate went with the car, but because it wasn't part of the deal the new owner was good enough to sign the plate back over. The moral of the story is put the plate on retention before sale to be sure.

Yes, the new owner has the rights to it. Unless the new owner is nice enough to sign it back to you!

You could get him to sign a bit of paper saying the plate is yours, and you agree to pay for transfer before a particular date, but people have been known to do silly things so safer to transfer it before sale.

Incidently I'd quite like a Q reg on my Opel Ascona C but the bastards at the DVLA say I have to stick with a C reg.

Q plate !?
Easiest way is to write the car off and then rebuild it using different cars to make the repaired one and then you HAVE to have a Q plate :-)
