Looking at putting my personal plate on the Cerbera so I thought I'd best check sizes.
My rear plate is one of the new type lit from above rather than behind so I presume its just the standard UK size.
However I'd like to go for the smaller front plate to increase air-flow, what sort of size would it need to be and has anyone had any problems with the law having had them fitted?

I have just ordered a 12x3 front plate for mine...so that it just covers the 2 screw holes that will be there from the existing plate, and also seems to not taking the pi$$ too much!...I will keep the original plate just in case though!

I had one of the very small front ones, 10 inch by 2.5, and I got pulled and fined £40 by a bored traffic policeman who was watching the slow traffic, and to his own admission couldn't do anyone for speeding because of the congestion.
The £40 fine was a ball-ache (took me about 2 hours to find my cheque book) but the 30 minute lecture by his lardy mate, which included a walk to his car to get the rule book on plate sizes and then walking back to mine to show me it was too small, getting out a tape measure etc... and I was being really nice and trying to get off with a slapped wriste, was excrutiatingly boring!
Only had the big plate on for a week before the radiator started to play up with a tiny leak, car runs between 5 and 10 degrees hotter now.

I think both of you have been very unlucky...
I have read threads on PH before where people have had very small plates or even none at all for ages, without a problem....guess its a bit like speeding...we all do it, its just unlucky if you get caught! 
I wouldnt put a small front plate on any of my cars...
Look at the pic in my profile ... previous owner did it ... looks great and assume it helps airflow ...
The day I got it was parked up with wife and kids in car and got told to replace it with correct size one ASAP by plod driving by in car ...
Said I would do so as soon as possible as I have the old one in the boot ...
I just havnt had chance in the first 6months of ownership ... my mate now has the same size plate on the front of his scooby ...

I feel for you guys who've had your collars felt over this. All the bloody effort we go to to keep our cars in tip top condition and some copper thinks it's a worthwhile use of his time to bollock you over the size of your plate - probably while multiple unroadworthy, dangerous sheds drive past behind him. Really makes you glad you paid your taxes doesn't it.

Having finally got around to taking the measurements I found that some sod at TVR (I assume since the car came direct and still has TVR plates) decided not to bother using the standard screw mounting holes (which are probably around 40cm apart) and instead screwed straight into the fibreglass, 47 cm apart 
Since standard plates are 52cm wide its not worth getting anything smaller really, as I can't even go for 3/4 size (39cm) without getting some clean-up work done on the front, so a smaller plate may have to wait until a front-end respray occurs as I can't see that I'd be able to fill the four holes and paint over them that well myself...

My plates are fastened on with strong double sided tape. Not the thin 'sellotape' type stuff. They dont budge.
They do if you go fast enough!
I'm confident Paddy, that they will not shift. I have calculated the wind resistance on the surface area of the plate, and measured the forces acting on the outer edges. No problems.
