Curious this one.....Went out to the car tonight, started her up and then left her to idle while I popped back indoors for a minute. Idle was rough, and she conked out. Started her again, gave her a bit of welly, idle remained rough, and she conked out once more.

The third time, the starter cranked, but the engine didn't fire. I could hear the electrics fire up (and the whine I assume was the fuel pump) but no life.

Took the wife's car.

Got back just now, thought I'd give her another try, and she started first time, but the idle was still dreadful.

I'm due two new coils (one nearly dead, am replacing both to be on the safe side), could that be it? Or is it just one of those things....?!

I would say a mixture of a rich mix and a weak spark.

And this is something that can appear and disappear at will?

Well, i'd guess the reason why it wouldn't start the third time and would later, was due to it being flooded.

There will be something wrong with the mixture somewhere if you are idling badly and having problems. Impossible to tell what the problem is though from here
My recommendation is to take it to someone who knows...

Will try and get safely to my Indy this morning.

'Scuse my ignorance chaps, but why would the car flood when idling?

Well, if cold, the car is pumping in a lot of fuel. Your car won't have stalled due to flooding, but starting it twice in a row and giving it a bit of welly the second time will be why you couldn't start it the third time.

I have a similar problem with mine. Cant leave it for a few mintues after cold start or it conks out and wont start again. Austec tell me its all to do with over fuelling when cold and hopefully going to sort it out when I get time to take it to them.

Damn annoying when you are supposed to be at a meet but your sitting in the car on the driveway punching the dash and the wife is rolling her eyes at you from the front door
