Steering wheel ribbon cable - why so much?
Discussion
Currently got the ribbon cable out of the steering wheel boss as I have wipers that come on every time I turn the wheel.
Not the wheel buttons as they were already unplugged. Removing the ribbon cable from the control box stopped the problem so pretty sure it's the ribbon cable.
However, why is there SO much? The cable spans my kitchen! I realise there is the need for slack to allow the wheel to turn, but seriously, 2 metres??

Hi Mr Basturd!
I had the same problem some time ago, and yes there is quite alot of it isn't there.
This does however give us many attempts to cut out the damaged section ( which does tend to be at one of the ends of the ribbon) and prise off the connection on the end with a small flat screwdriver, and crimp it back on using pliers.
If you hold the ribbon up to the light you may be able to see the damaged copper.
Just be carefull how much you cut out or you may find that you can only go round left hand corners!....... Ok if you live in a roundabout i suppose!

I was referring to the length of it, however the cost is quite extortionate too!
I did take the plastic outer off but had trouble getting the connectors out of the ribbon cable.
The issue I've had is that the copper wire has worn through the sheath, and some electrical tape so someone has obviously tried to mend this before. It's on the 90 degree bend as the ribbon comes through into the boss from the back. Stupid setup really, can't believe there wasn't a 90 connector they could have used instead! Fixed it for the time being by bending the ribbon cable upwards 90 degrees instead of downwards!

I wondered why TVR hadn't just used normal wiring to begin with!
Turned into a bit of an epic afternoon/evening. That collar that sits inside the steering wheel boss is a real PITA to get back in. I think the last time someone had my wheel off the collar wasn't put back in properly - no matter what I did it just wouldn't sit inside the boss. In the end I had to zip tie the steering column spring completely closed, plus use the 17mm bolt through a spanner with a hole over the steering wheel to act as a puller to pull the column up enough. Once I'd done that I was able to zip tie the collar in place and luckily it stayed where it should. Took me about 5 or 6 hours!

Thanks. I had read that earlier, but struggled to find something that would work to pull the column up.Though I now do have the problem that the indicator cancelling ring is too high!

(Also wondering how long it would be before someone noticed) well spotted!
