I thought it was about time after running with no Air con for a few years to finally get it plumbed back in.
I've bought a new dryer but it seems different to the one on the car. But looking at pics from various other sites they all show the same as the one i have bought. But I know pics are often reference only.

The one on the car has connections for in and out for the liquid and also an electrical connector.
The one I have bought has in and out for liquid but also two other points for connections. inside both these there are those plungers similar to that found on car tyre valves. But on my existing one after disconnecting the electrical connector there is nothing.

Have I got the wrong part or is it just because it is more universal than the original?

I fitted this one to mine and worked perfectly. I assume it is the same one you have bought.

It's not the same as it doesn't have the sight glass at the top. (and was half the price) But it did have the 4 connectors like that one has.
I am assuming you connected your electrical connector to the side that it fitted and just left the other blanked off?

What is the purpose of the electrical connection on the dryer? Is it for checking the pressure?

Yes, so you don't run the compressor without gas/lubricant.
