I'm in the middle of a chassis refurb on the Cerb and thought I would try to "improve" the expansion tank by doing something to stop the overflow from peeing down the passenger side of the engine bay and onto the chassis.

It's an Audi A6/100 part and the Audi boys have various posts on it too, without the chassis problem.

I was thinking of jamming/gluing another coolant pipe in the overflow hole (underneath and centre) and route it down and away from the chassis.

Has anyone already done this successfully. And can I steal you idea?

Below are a few pics from one of the Audi forums:

I have done that with limited success. The problem is that when the cap does blow, the volume of coolant expelled is greater than the tube I have employed can drain, therefore it overflows over the top of the coolant tank instead.

The one good thing about the Audi expansion tank is that it has a low coolant level sensor, which of course is not connected on the Cerb.

I'd be happy to get rid of it altogether, but I guess finding something that shallow, with the cap in the same place, would be a challenge.

Has anyone managed to find a possible replacement tank?

Do you mean an alternative or a direct replacement? Because the Audi ones are available through tvr sites or gsf spares.

I mean a better option. Best I could find was this, but not cheap, haven't confirmed the measurements, and no level sensor.

I've got a radtec fitted, as I was fed up of the low water sender rattling when driving on bumpy roads

I’ve just received my Radtec alloy one, after waiting 5 months. It doesn’t fit, filler neck in wrong place, corner that is normally cut off still in place and can’t be cut, it’s going back...

Same as me John - However, after reading your post, I re-checked mine and found that the lower spigot is incorrectly positioned which mislocates the filler neck in relation to the Windscreen Cowl.
The Cowl itself can't be installed because the front, inside corner of the tank blocks it.

I can only think that they've sent me the wrong unit yikes

Mine is being picked up tomorrow and back to radtec. I have sent them an old plastic one as well so they can modify the alloy one to fit

Yeah, Darren asked me to do that as well but, with their record, there was no way I was gonna let it out of my hands
plus I'm still doing tests, using it.

I promised him some dimemsions but if you're gonna send yours then I won't bother.

Thanks for the update thumbup

Mines back with them, they have started again with the alloy one as it needed so much alteration. They are going to copy the okd plastic one I sent so they should have the dimensions if you send your back...Not sure if will be back for Christmas????

Wrapped their one up at the beginning of Dec but no-one turned up to collect it.
Couldn't trust them enough with mine and just as well as the last communication I had said that they had built a new one but were still waiting for the Cap !
Hopefully in the New Year then.....banghead

Looks lovely... BUT ...as before, how does it vent?
Is that a plain sealing cap, or does it have a blow-off valve incorporated? ...in which case it will puke over the top face.
If no vent, then what hose will pop first?...

It's a superb copy of the Audi tank!

Including the flaw that destroys our chassis

I've had it with the Audi expansion tanks, and it's not just because they keep failing

Radtech are not advertising Header Tanks for TVRs anymore, but the Aston version looks close

https://www.radtec.co.uk/shop/radiators/aston-mart...

Any ideas?
