Engine Fire - AJP 4.2/4.5

recently took car for MOT ...noticed engineers were spending a long time on the emission testing ...could'nt get hydrocarbon content to the required level. engine was held at 3000 rpm for test on a couple of occasions (as prompted by the emission test unit). went to have a look just as one of the engineers noticed the flames 'licking' from the bonnet on the passenger side. Quick squirt from the fire extinguisher. ....HT lead cable ties appear to have melted, HT leads dropped on exhaust, wooof! ....call me paranoid, but i've managed to convince myself that the 'odd' bank is running a lot hotter than the 'even' bank. witnessed exhaust on 'odds' glowing red, but not on 'evens' ...have checked air filter, thought that may have had a part if clogged on one side ....is engine running hotter on one side a viable situation, or does everyones cerb do the same at the MOT testing station

they both be glow red on that sort of test .. sounds like the even bank is runing too rich. faulty lambda sensor maybe?

Re. MOT emissions, just thought I'd show off for a second...

My Tusc, complete with de-cat, flew straight through the emissions test last week... was (from memory) only a third of the way up to the legal limit on both HCs and CO. Cats schmats.

cerb was way out, and on its way to failing emission test (after HT leads had been replaced, after fire) ...guys suggested taking car for a run on the local A' road ...came back 10 minutes later and it sailed through (now theres a tip i wish i'd known about:-))

looking at the lambdas jools, can they be tested?

if it passed after wards then no need .. assuming they did teh test properly and tested both exhausts added and halved the readings to get the average?

A friend with a Tuscan 4.0 Red Rose, with cats still on as far as I know has had no joy getting his passed, has failed at two places now.

Guess your Tuscan and his were built at different ends of the week

Had a different ECU fitted when it was de-catted.

My 4.5 cerb passed with no cats. Easy peasy.
