gearbox -advice, please

Hello everybody,
the gearbox in my car failed, it is out of the car now and opened. The gears of 5th suffer from serious tooth-decay. Looking at the debris I am still wondering how little sound it made when it failed.
So what are my options?
So far I know of a place who offer refurbished boxes in exchange. Only I cannot tell if they consider my old one repairable.
The workshop over here would repair as well. Labour plus the standard overhaul kit would be as much as option one. I would have to add the cost for replacement gears and I would have to find them first.
So it is a decision between two concepts:
On the one hand I cannot be sure if my box will be repairable enough for concept one -and understandably I cannot hope for anybody to comment on a broken gearbox before seeing it.
So it is a little hard to calculate but even in worst case there is a maximum of surcharge + refurbished box. The price for refurbishing is fixed.
On the other hand refurbishing here is not fixed, asking for a quote for worst case rewarded me with a "you-better-start-saving" kind of smile.
Has anybody had his gearbox overhauled and would recommend the place?
The old gearbox obviously has been overhauled prior to my ownership, this time I would like it to last a little longer...
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I chose to buy and fit a used box which came from a Chimaera. I've only done about 1,000 miles in it since fitting it but it seems to be holding up ok, and it wasn't expensive.
I still have the box with the broken 5th gear, and I'm still pondering whether to have it rebuilt as a spare.
I appreciate it may be difficult for you to find a used box, but don't discount that option.

I have never used either of these firms, but I believe that gearboxman and also readman racing are Companies in the UK that frequently rebuild these gearboxes. If you look on YouTube, there are plenty of American videos on how to rebuild T5 world class gearboxes step by step and how to upgrade and strengthen the boxes. All the gear sets should be available from America via Ebay.
