It's been getting harder to select gears over the last week, very notchy as if the clutch isn't completely engaged.

HHC said last week it could be the master cylinder as he detected moisture around the bell housing and told me to check the fluid level and if there was any blackness to the fluid.

Well, I havn't had a chance to use it much all week but finally got round to checking it today and found blackness in the fluid. It didn't need much topping up, a thimble full at the most.

Does this still indicate a master cylinder problem?

Will probably take it up to HHC on Monday, but until then, anyone have a clue and how much it's likely to be.

4.2 97' if it helps.

Forgot to mention, the slave seems ok, no fluid loss around the pedal.

Hi Byff ... do a search on clutches ... mine was exactly the same ... no fluid loss anywhere ... erratic action ... pedal pushing back etc etc ended up new clutch and slave cylinder!

Hope this helps ... DAS

if that's really what hhc said they got it completely the wrong way around.

master is connected to the pedal .. look up in teh footwell .. follow the clutch pedal up and see the rod coming off it .. follow that to the rubber boot and if the boot is wet there's a leak there, if not it *could* be at the slave which is ..

.. in the bellhousing and a right royal pita to do

symptoms .. does the pedal feel light and sponget initially? if so it's fluid loss from either slave or master cyls.

does pedal feel exactly as before just gear selection difficult? if so it's clucth fingers. It's *very* easy to diagnose these problems from the above information, and yuo then get a indication of costs involved..

clutches are about 460 pounds for the unit.
slave cyls are about 170 for the unit, 20 for the seals
labour on either of the above about 6-7 hours
master cyl seal kit about 15 pounds, labour no more than an hour.

hope that helps.

That doesnt make sense, the master cylinder is behind the pedal, its the slave thats in the bellhousing... if thats what HHC said, then thats very worrying!

Slip of the tongue I would have thought. But a few hundred quids worth of a slip. As has been said that describes the slave.

HHC seem to have quite a good rep from customers and bearing in mind how easily UKBobs thread got on about DM before they had a chance to offer a solution I'll let them off with it.

Please, enough about HHC, they were good enough to have a drive of my car and give it a quick look over last week FOC on a different matter. The difficulty engaging gears happened on the drive there and wasn't too bad at first. I'm sure it was just a slip of the tongue or a slip of the ear.

Judging by that, the Master cylinder is bone dry around the rubber boot seal thingy so looks like either a clutch or a slave cylinder.

Looks like this could turn out expensive. Did you get those uprated slave cylinder seals Joolz?

The pedal feels different from before. It used to operate smoothly right down to the stop, but now half way down it feels a bit rough, like there's pressure behind it.

I'll try to get out tomorrow morning and give an accurate discription of what it does when engine is on/off and what the pedal feels like.

Before you get too worried, do a quick check of this.
Reach down in the footwell and pull the floormat out of the car. Try the clutch.

I had a problem where I had a bit of pressure half way down just after my slave was rebuilt. I wasn't losing fluid and couldn't figure it out. I was passing by Joolz one day and asked him if it felt normal, he reached in, moved my carpet and said try that.
I felt a little silly that day
