Afternoon all,

I've managed to wipe the silver coating off the reflectors. I assumed they were proper chrome and gave them a quick squirt of solvent before wiping clean. Imagine my horror and the language when the coating came off.......

New reflectors from the usual suspects are incredibly expensive, are there other sources for new ones?

Cheers

Could you not get them re-chromed?

Yeah I can. I've had a look amongst classic car forums and it seems there are several places that offer the service.

Presumably mine are painted if the coating has come with a little solvent. I'll look to see what paint options there are and whether this is a long term fix and acceptable for MOTs.

I looked at the re chroming service and it looks very good but they take weeks to turn them around, if you're already in there then check the adjusters aren't rusted to death and eaten through the retaining slots on the lense as you'll definitely need new ones!

Thanks James, that looks like a good way forward. I've dropped Russ a line so hopefully he'll pick it up and reply.

I'm keen to know more about the LED lamps and lenses too, perhaps you could post a description / photos of how you went about it.

Cheers

Hey Ian

I got the reflectors from Russ and the LED's online with the intention of doing it, but never seemed to find the time so when I sent it to Str8Six for its 12k service I asked them to do it for me. They managed to break both lenses in the process so I ended up with new ones, which made the whole setup much better.

Will take pics of them for you with lights on and off. They are awesomely bright, but need adjusting - they are currently pointing at the moon....!

Sounds promising. Are the lenses standard or something a little more modern? I know concerns have been raised on the forums about retro fitting LED lights and subsequently having issues at MOT time and being flashed by other drivers as the light patterns dazzle oncoming drivers. Do you think your set up will avoid this once you've got the lights adjusted to shine on the earth as opposed to the moon?

Standard lenses. I think they just need adjusting... Will keep you posted but worst case I will just pop standard lamps and readjust for MOT. Dropping the current ones will stop being flashed and still allow me to see. Frustrating that they weren't setup properly when fitted (as you can clearly see they are way too high) but not hard to fix.
