Not the best start to the day. I started my Cerb up and let it idle while the de-mist cleared the windscreen. After a minute or so it cut out with a complete loss of electrical power. Start & stop buttons did nothing, radio died, no power to windows or door opening. I got out using the emergency cable and took my boring car to work.

Beyond the silver key (which I thought would have left power to everything except ignition?) does anyone have any ideas?

Flat battery?

From what I understand the car won't produce enough power to run everything at idle.

Could be total balls though.....

It's been on an Accumate all weekend and had 2x 50 mile runs yesterday so I'd hope it wasnt flat but you never know. I didn't have time to mess about with it this morning so I thought I'd consult PH for a list of things to check when I get home.

The next easiest things to check would be the main fuses, one normally round the back of the engine in a small black box, you also might find one near the ecu, I would check the one behind the engine first.

I'd start here too. The fuse can degrade over time or indeed it might have given up completely. Best to replace it with a midi type fuse which is fully encapsulated and less susceptible to deterioration, etc.

If the fuse proves to be intact then check for battery voltage and if you can it started check that alternator is charging. It might be that the regulator is knackered.

My BMW did this a few months ago, had been running fine, no issues, started up, drove a mile to the supermarket, stopped and was then stone cold dead, couldn't unlock it or anything. Was a dead battery reading about 7 volts or something stupid. The RAC guy couldn't understand how I got there.

From FarmyardPants a while ago

"My 5p's worth re the Big Fuse, which seems to have achieved mythical status: it protects the charging circuit. If it blows, the effect is the same as disconnecting the alternator. It won't stop the car from starting, or any other functions like doors, windows or immobiliser, assuming the battery is charged. The first symptom of a big fuse failing is the battery dash light staying on (with engine running). Without charge from the alternator you have maybe 10 mins of driving time, depending on current draw, from a fully charged battery before the engine stalls."

Total loss of power won't be the silver key either (from my experience) as this just cuts out the fuel pump, not all of the electrics

Total loss of power normally equals terminal falling off of battery or similar so would check voltages on the battery and connectivity

Well, that turned out to be an easy fix. Positive battery terminal was a bit loose.

OOPS. Glad it was a simple fix.

Mine suffered a total loss of power today on the way in to work.

It had been on the accumate overnight, unlocked it but noticed the indicator flash was very weak, but the doors opened and the engine cranked over healthy enough.

Drove about 12miles, pulled away from a junction and all power cut out just as the OP described. Let it coast to a halt, tried the buttons, doors etc - nothing. Just about to pull the release handle to get out and noticed ignition light had come back on, tried the button and it started as if nothing had happened.

Hopefully it'll be something loose and easy to fix, but mine has a battery isolator which gives a bit of grief so might look at removing it.
