and its a small one, the passenger side window doesn't go up all the way when closing the door. its only by half a cm or so, but it compounds, half a cm less each time the door is open and shut. the window buttons on the inside work fine, drop the window a bit then close it all the way up. is there a sensor or something not working quite right?

A few questions,
Will the window go all the way up with the button once the door is closed?
Does the window drop ok when you open the door?
Does this always happern or is it intermitant?
Have you reset the door control box in the boot?
Does the light go out in the cabin with the door closed?

window will go all the way up, sometimes it needs to go down first.
its intermitant, started happening since this ice age thing started last week
haven't reset the box and the light does go out...
as for the search, didn't go back far enough, keep forgetting there is the date selector thing
Have a very similar problem with my window at the moment. Open door, window drops down, close door window doesn't go back up, and window button will not close is either. After closing and opening the window about ten time, it then goes all the way up. At that point climb across car and get out passenger side. Had the problem before and it was nothing to do with control box or sensor, but wiring in door. Taking it back down the dealers as this problem meant I had to use the back door entrance into the car in the middle of Reading town centre as some short had obviously caused all doors and boot switches to stop working. After I finally got into the car all worked fine, well other than above issue.

If the buttons work ok but the problem is only when opening or closing 1 door then it is likely to be either the sensor at the bottom of the door/sill or the wiring for the sensor.
Mine had similar symptoms, window wouldn't go up properly after closing, interior light stayed on, etc. Problem was the connector for the sensor was corroded and the wire was about to break off. Changed it for bullet connectors.

If you want to check all the connectors then take off the inner door card. 8 or 9 allen screws around the edge then lift off. If you have a speaker then watch as the wires will no doubt be short.
Once it's off look into the door and you will see various connectors and the window runners etc. You will see the sensor on the bottom of the door, follow the wires for a few inches till you see the connector.
While you are in there, you may as well check all the other connectors just in case.
It's quite a simple job, only takes 5 or 10 mins to get the door card off.

checked it today... open the door, push the up button... it goes up about half an inch or so, when i close the door the window goes all the way up. is it normal for the window to not go all the way up with the door open? i would expect it to stay down a bit so the door can close properly

That seems ok!
Err try a box reset. Its the second from the right above the fuel tank. Just unplug the terminal with the red and black cables. After 30 seconds connect it again, have your remote fob ready as sometimes the doors lock on reconnection!
If its not that then you're into wiring checks.
I know what that is. Take off the door trim, look at the top left of the door and you'll see a little microswitch with probably a plastic lever under the lower edge of the glass.
When you press the door open button the window drops until the bottom of the glass presses this lever in, activating the microswitch and 'telling' the controller that the window has dropped enough.
The plastic lever wears because of the friction of the edge of the glass, so there is a difference bwteeen the position that the switch activates on the downward part of the cycle, and when it deactivates when the window is on its way up.
The fix is to unscrew the microswitch from the door, place two small (M3 I think) washers on the screw threads before reattaching it, so the switch is a little more proud of the door.
This will fix it for a good while, until the lever wears more, when you'll need a new switch.
I think the new ones have a steel lever which doesn't wear away!
