Graunching noise turning left

Can anyone shed some light on this problem,
I've noticed something weird over the last day or so. I first noticed it when turning a sharp left I felt and heard what can only be described as a graunch, its sooo hard to put into words what it sounds like. Since then I've been trying to get it to do it again. This morning in the work car park I was able to play about until I could get it to do it again.
If you turn the steering wheel left at about say twenty-to-two (imagine a clock) then it graunches, as soon as it goes twenty five-to-one then it stops, any tighter into the turn and it doesn't come back. Its almost immediately on the turn in, and only turning left - what does anyone think this could be - I want to take it back to dealers to have a look at but some educated guesses may help to locate it sooner, thanks

PAS levels would be the first thing I'd check. If it sounds like a "groan", especially. Check this thread.

I had the same recently. I'd put the car in for a service and the exhausts were taken off and refitted. After that, turning left with a certain amount of steering lock and accelerating lightly always resulted in a rumbling/graunching through the car. I had the exhausts remounted and that sorted the problem.

Thirded! I'd bet a beer on it being that! (If I'm reading you description correctly
) Do you feel a vibration from under your seat at the same time as he noise? If so, it will be this I'm sure. Mine was fixed with gentle persuasion with a crowbar.
Cheers guys for the replies, it has just come back from dealers having had a leak on the PAS as it was completely out of fluid, as the pipe has been replaced, I'm assuming that the fluid would have been filled back up but i'll check (never assume anything)
The noise definitely comes from the left front and I think I can feel it through the wheel not sure about through the car - will check the oil level too.

is the best way to put it and its quite short lived (the noise that is). Can't rule out the exhaust but does seem to be only when turning left.

Just an update on the graunching noise problem-
Took it to Gorner's this morning and they diagnosed the noise as being the exhaust rubbing on the chassis when turning left, so it will be in for a bracket to stop it soon.
So all those who diagnosed exhaust pat on the back !!
